Chapter 5 - The Midnight IntruderThe legal storm broke over Seattle like a tidal wave.

By midnight, Clara had managed to escape the café under the protection of Arthur’s security detail, retreating to her damp basement apartment. But the apartment no longer felt like a refuge; it felt like a trap.

The $50 million transfer was scheduled to clear at 9:00 AM the following morning. Until then, Clara was trapped in a terrifying limbo. She sat on the edge of her sagging mattress, the heavy brass key resting on her palm, staring at the shadows dancing across the peeling wallpaper.

Clang.

A sharp, metallic noise echoed from the kitchen area.

Clara froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slowly slid off the bed, her bare feet padding silently across the linoleum floor.

The window above the kitchen sink—which opened into the dark, narrow alleyway behind the building—was cracked open an inch to let in the cool night air. The flimsy metal screen had been pushed out from the outside, dangling loosely in the wind.

A shadow moved against the moonlight.

Before Clara could scream, a heavy, gloved hand clamped tightly over her mouth, cutting off her breath. A rough, gravelly voice whispered fiercely in her ear:

"Don't make a sound, sweetheart, unless you want your little sister to wake up in a body bag."

Clara’s eyes widened in sheer terror. Lily! Her sister was asleep in the adjoining room.

The intruder was large, smelling of cheap bourbon, leather, and stale cigarette smoke. He shoved Clara roughly against the wall, pinning her arms behind her back with brutal strength. With his free hand, he patted down her pockets, his coarse fingers searching frantically until they grazed against the silver chain around her neck.

With a sharp yank, the chain snapped.

"Got it," the brute grunted, holding up the brass key in the dim moonlight.

"Please!" Clara gasped, managing to slip her mouth free for a split second. "Take the money! Take everything! Just leave us alone!"

The intruder chuckled, a dark, menacing sound. "Mrs. Vance sends her regards, little girl. She says family business always stays in the family."

With a sudden, violent shove, the intruder threw Clara hard against the kitchen counter, sending ceramic mugs crashing to the floor in a shower of shards. By the time Clara scrambled to her feet and rushed to the window, the alleyway was pitch black and empty.

The key—the only physical link to Alistair Vance, the proof of her kindness, the master key to her entire future—was gone.
