Chapter 6 - The Missing SignatureAt 8:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the 45th floor of the Sterling & Abernathy Tower overlooking the Seattle harbor buzzed with tense, suffocating energy.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed a panoramic view of the misty bay. Inside the room, mahogany surfaces gleamed under recessed lighting. Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the long conference table, flanked by three senior financial auditors and a team of armed corporate security officers.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and Clara walked in. She looked exhausted, pale, and shaken, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes from a sleepless night of terror. She wore a simple, clean blouse, holding her hands tightly folded in her lap.

"Good morning, Miss Vance," Arthur said, standing up respectfully and pulling out a plush leather chair for her. "I trust you rested well? We are just fifteen minutes away from the wire transfer execution."

Clara swallowed hard, her voice trembling. "Mr. Sterling... someone broke into my apartment last night."

Arthur’s professional demeanor instantly vanished, replaced by sharp, alert danger. "Explain. Right now."

"A man. He broke through my window," Clara whispered, her hands shaking as she recounted the attack. "He pinned me down, threatened my sister, and stole the brass key. The one Alistair left me."

Before Arthur could respond, the heavy boardroom doors flew open again with a loud, theatrical slam.

Victoria Vance strode into the room, wearing an immaculate white Chanel suit and designer sunglasses, a smug, venomous smile plastered across her face. Behind her walked two high-priced corporate defense attorneys carrying heavy briefcases, along with a middle-aged man wearing a rumpled gray suit and carrying a portable document scanner.

"Good morning, losers," Victoria purred, sashaying toward the table like she owned the building. She tossed a small, metallic object onto the polished mahogany surface.

It skidded across the wood and came to a rest right in front of Arthur Sterling.

It was the brass lion-engraved key.

Clara gasped, pulling back as if the key were a venomous snake.

"Looking for this, little beggar?" Victoria laughed, taking a seat directly across from Clara and resting her elbows on the table. "My security team found it dropped in the alleyway outside a rather pathetic excuse for an apartment building last night. According to Section 4, Paragraph C of Alistair’s estate charter, the primary beneficiary must physically present the authentic estate key and execute the final authorization signature before 9:00 AM sharp. If the key is lost, stolen, or surrendered, the entire $50 million trust defaults instantly... to the surviving bloodline."

Victoria leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with absolute triumph. "And that's me, darling. Hand over the portfolio. Time's up."
