CHAPTER 3 — The Child Daniel Never Knew
Daniel stared at the photograph like it had burned through his soul.
The little boy had his eyes.
His smile.
Even the same small birthmark under his left ear.
Emma’s voice was calm, but every word cut like glass.
“His name is Noah.”
Daniel could barely breathe.
“No… she told me he belonged to her ex.”
Emma gave a bitter laugh.
“Of course she did. Because Rebecca didn’t want your money.”
Daniel looked up, confused.
Emma leaned closer.
“She wanted revenge.”
That name hit him like a punch.
Rebecca.
The woman from the hotel receipts.
The woman he had hidden for years.
The woman he thought was his escape.
Emma opened the folder again and pulled out an old newspaper clipping.
Daniel’s face twisted when he saw it.
A car accident.
Seven years ago.
A young woman dead.
Her younger sister survived.
Emma whispered, “Rebecca’s sister was my best friend, Daniel.”
His blood ran cold.
“She died the night you drove drunk and paid someone to bury the police report.”
Daniel’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
Emma’s eyes filled with tears for the first time.
“You didn’t just betray me.”
“You destroyed someone’s family before you ever destroyed ours.”
Then the doorbell rang.
Daniel turned slowly.
Emma didn’t move.
She already knew who it was.
Lily ran to the hallway and opened the door before anyone could stop her.
A woman stood outside holding a little boy’s hand.
Rebecca.
And beside her…
Noah.
The boy looked at Daniel and smiled shyly.
“Are you my dad?”
Daniel broke.
But before he could answer, Rebecca stepped forward and placed one final envelope on the table.
Inside was a recorded confession.
Not from Daniel.
From Emma.
Daniel looked at his wife in horror.
Emma wiped her tears and whispered,
“I didn’t bring her here to expose you.”
“I brought her here because tonight… both of you finally learn the truth.”
Then she looked at Noah and Lily.
“They are not half-siblings.”
Daniel froze.
Rebecca gasped.
Emma’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“They’re twins.”
