CHAPTER 7 — The Message Hidden in the Fire

Emma crawled through the smoke, coughing violently.

The mansion was in ruins.

Burning wood cracked above her.

Broken glass covered the floor.

"DANIEL!"

Her voice echoed through the destruction.

No answer.

Then...

A weak groan.

She pushed aside a fallen beam and found Daniel trapped beneath it, blood running down his forehead.

"You... you're alive..."

He smiled painfully.

"Barely."

Emma and Richard struggled together until they pulled him free.

But there was still no sign of Lily or Noah.

Only the white envelope.

Emma tore it open with trembling hands.

Inside was a single photograph.

The twins sat side by side inside an old stone room.

Neither child looked hurt.

But behind them...

A giant black crest was carved into the wall.

A circle.

Inside it...

A crown.

Richard's face instantly changed.

"Oh no..."

Emma looked at him.

"You know this place?"

Richard nodded.

"I've spent twenty years trying to find it."

He turned the photo over.

On the back was a handwritten message.

'Midnight. Come alone. Bring the key your father died protecting.'

Emma frowned.

"What key?"

Before Richard could answer...

Margaret quietly reached into her necklace.

Her fingers shook as she unclasped a small silver pendant she had worn every single day for decades.

She placed it in Emma's hand.

It wasn't jewelry.

It was an ancient key.

Daniel stared at it.

"You've had this all these years?"

Margaret's eyes filled with regret.

"Your father begged me never to lose it."

Emma whispered,

"My father died in a boating accident."

Margaret slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"He was murdered."

Silence filled the room.

Richard closed his eyes.

"I tried to tell you years ago."

"But every witness disappeared before I could."

Margaret pointed toward the photograph.

"That fortress..."

"It's beneath Blackstone Island."

"The Circle has hidden there for over fifty years."

Daniel looked toward the burning mansion.

"We call the police."

Richard immediately answered.

"We can't."

"Half the police work for them."

Emma looked down at the tiny silver key in her hand.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The switched babies.

The murders.

The hidden fortune.

Her father's death.

None of it had ever been about money.

Daniel quietly asked,

"So... what did your father leave behind?"

Margaret answered with a trembling voice.

"He didn't leave money."

"He left proof."

"The kind of proof that could destroy presidents..."

"...bring down billionaires..."

"...and erase The Circle forever."

Just then...

Emma's phone vibrated.

A live video call.

Unknown Number.

She answered without thinking.

The screen lit up.

Lily and Noah sat together in a dimly lit room.

They weren't crying.

Someone had carefully dressed them in matching white clothes.

A masked man stepped into view behind them.

His voice was calm.

"You have exactly three hours."

"If you bring the key..."

"You may leave with one child."

He paused.

"But only one."

The screen went black.

Emma stared at the phone in horror.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"We're getting both of them back."

Emma slowly closed her hand around the silver key.

Her eyes filled with determination.

"No."

"We're ending this tonight."

May you like

But none of them knew... someone in the room had already betrayed them.
