CHAPTER 5 — The Mother Who Sold Her Own Blood

The bouquet hit the marble floor.
White roses scattered in every direction.
Margaret Whitmore stood frozen in the doorway, her elegant smile replaced by pure panic.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, she whispered,
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Emma slowly walked toward her.
Every step echoed through the house.
"Seven years..."
"I searched every hospital."
"I hired investigators in three countries."
"I nearly lost my mind wondering where my baby had gone."
She stopped only inches away.
"And all along..."
"...my own mother knew."
Margaret's lips trembled.
"You have no proof."
Emma smiled for the first time that night.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
She nodded toward the living room.
A tall man stepped out from the shadows.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
Holding a leather briefcase.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
"Richard Hayes..."
"The former federal prosecutor?"
Richard placed the briefcase on the table.
"It took five years to reopen a case everyone wanted buried."
He opened the case.
Inside were signed contracts.
Offshore bank records.
Private surveillance photographs.
And one transfer receipt.
$2,000,000.00
The sender's name made everyone gasp.
Margaret Whitmore.
The recipient...
Helen Brooks.
The very nurse who had confessed.
Margaret stumbled backward.
"This... this is fabricated!"
Richard quietly slid another document across the table.
"It came directly from a Swiss bank after a court order."
Daniel felt sick.
Everything Emma had said was true.
But Richard wasn't finished.
He pressed a small recorder.
Margaret's own voice filled the room.
"Take one child. Leave the other. Emma will be easier to control if she thinks fate took the baby."
Margaret covered her mouth in horror.
"I never meant..."
Emma interrupted.
"You never meant to get caught."
Lily looked up at her grandmother with tears in her eyes.
"Grandma..."
"Did you really take my brother away?"
Margaret couldn't answer.
Instead, she collapsed into a chair, sobbing.
Then she looked directly at Emma.
"You still don't understand."
Emma narrowed her eyes.
"What don't I understand?"
Margaret whispered words that made every person in the room stop breathing.
"I didn't sell your son for money."
"I paid someone..."
"...to save his life."
The room fell silent.
Emma's heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
Margaret slowly looked toward Noah.
Then at Lily.
Finally, she whispered the sentence that changed everything.
"The people who wanted your inheritance weren't the most dangerous enemies."
"They wanted both babies dead."
"I only had enough time to save one."
Just then...
A deafening explosion shattered every window in the house.
Glass rained across the living room.
The lights went out.
Outside...
A masked figure stood in the smoke, aiming a rifle at the front door.
And a distorted voice echoed through the darkness.
May you like
"Finish what should have been done seven years ago."
