CHAPTER 1 — THE PHONE CALL THAT SHOOK AN EMPIRE

The fever came without warning.
At six o'clock that icy November evening, Emily Carter wrapped her eight-month-old son, Noah, in every blanket she could find before racing through the streets toward Mercy Memorial Hospital.
His tiny body burned against her chest.
His breathing was becoming slower.
Every red light felt like torture.
"Please don't leave me," she whispered over and over as tears blurred the windshield.
By the time the emergency doctors rushed Noah inside, his temperature had climbed dangerously high.
Machines surrounded him.
Nurses inserted IV lines.
Doctors shouted instructions.
Emily stood frozen outside the treatment room, soaked from the rain and unable to stop shaking.
Then came the question she had spent over a year fearing.
"Who's the father?"
Emily looked away.
"He's... not here."
The billing supervisor folded her arms.
"Without the father's information, we'll have problems completing legal paperwork."
"My son needs a doctor."
"He also needs complete records."
The judgment in the woman's voice hurt almost as much as the fear.
People in the waiting room slowly began watching.
Emily hated every second of it.
The physician returned moments later with a serious expression.
"We're worried about a rare genetic infection."
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
"We need the father's medical history immediately."
She stared at the floor.
There was only one person who could answer.
One man she had sworn never to contact again.
Fifteen months earlier, she had divorced Adrian Romano.
The newspapers called him a billionaire shipping executive.
The police whispered another title.
A man whose name powerful people refused to say out loud.
Emily had disappeared before telling him she was pregnant.
She believed she had saved their child.
Now...
Her child might die because of that decision.
Her hands trembled as she dialed the number she had memorized years ago.
Three rings.
Then a familiar voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
"Who is this?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"It's me."
Silence.
Then...
"Emily?"
"Our son is dying."
The world seemed to stop breathing.
"...What did you just say?"
"We have a son."
Nothing.
Not even breathing.
Finally...
"Tell me where."
"Mercy Memorial."
"I'll be there."
The call ended.
Exactly nineteen minutes later...
Every window in the hospital began shaking.
People rushed toward the glass.
A black helicopter descended through the storm, landing directly on the rooftop.
Doctors stopped working.
Security guards stepped aside.
Then four men wearing black suits entered first.
Behind them walked Adrian Romano.
His expensive suit was soaked from the rain.
His face revealed nothing.
Until he saw the little boy through the ICU window.
For the first time in years...
The most feared man in the city looked terrified.
Then his eyes slowly moved toward the woman who had delayed Emily's paperwork.
His voice never rose.
"Who decided forms were more important than my son's heartbeat?"
No one answered.
May you like
Because everyone suddenly realized exactly who had walked into the hospital.
And nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.
