CHAPTER 1 — "THE MAN EVERYONE LAUGHED AT"
The rooftop restaurant overlooked the glittering skyline, where billionaires closed deals over champagne and celebrities hid behind designer sunglasses.
Every table was occupied.
Every phone was ready.
When Ethan Carter stood up from his chair and reached into his jacket, the entire restaurant grew quiet.
His girlfriend, Vanessa Whitmore, smiled.
She expected a diamond.
She expected applause.
Instead, Ethan pulled out a tiny velvet box containing a modest engagement ring.
Not flashy.
Not expensive.
Just elegant.
A ring he had spent nearly every dollar he owned to buy.
He took a deep breath.
"Vanessa..."
His voice trembled.
"I know I'm not rich yet. I don't own yachts or skyscrapers. But I promise you one thing..."
He dropped onto one knee.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret saying yes."
Gasps filled the restaurant.
People smiled.
Some even clapped softly.
Vanessa stared at the ring.
Then...
She laughed.
Not a nervous laugh.
Not an embarrassed laugh.
A cruel one.
"So this..."
she said loudly enough for every table to hear,
"...is what you think I deserve?"
The restaurant became silent.
She picked up the ring between two fingers like it was contaminated.
"This probably cost less than my handbag."
A few guests chuckled.
Ethan's face turned pale.
"I saved for months..."
"You should have saved for ten years."
More laughter erupted.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"My father owns hotels on three continents."
"My mother flies private."
"My watch costs more than your car."
She leaned closer.
"And you seriously think I'd marry a broke financial analyst who still rents an apartment?"
Someone started recording.
Within seconds, dozens of phones were pointed toward Ethan.
Vanessa wasn't finished.
"You know what's embarrassing?"
She turned toward the crowd.
"He actually believed I loved him."
The laughter became louder.
Even the waiters exchanged awkward glances.
Ethan slowly stood up.
He didn't yell.
He didn't cry.
He simply closed the ring box.
"I understand."
Vanessa smirked.
"I hope you do."
Just then—
The rooftop elevator doors burst open.
A man in a crisp navy pilot's uniform hurried inside, breathing heavily.
His polished shoes echoed across the marble floor.
He looked around frantically.
"Ethan Carter?"
The entire restaurant froze.
The pilot spotted Ethan.
Without hesitation...
He hurried over...
Stopped...
And bowed deeply.
"Mr. Carter."
Everyone stared.
The pilot spoke loudly enough for the entire rooftop to hear.
"I'm terribly sorry for interrupting."
"But your aircraft has been fueled and is ready for departure."
Silence.
Vanessa blinked.
"My... aircraft?"
The pilot nodded respectfully.
"Yes, sir."
"The Gulfstream requested for tonight."
Vanessa frowned.
"There must be some mistake."
The pilot looked confused.
"No mistake, ma'am."
He turned back toward Ethan.
"Your grandfather asked me to personally escort you."
Then he added words that drained every ounce of color from Vanessa's face.
"The board has gathered."
"They're waiting for their new Chairman."
No one laughed anymore.
Not one person.
The phones were still recording...
But now...
Every camera was pointed at Ethan.

And Vanessa suddenly realized...
She had never actually known who the man she had just humiliated really was.
