CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET THE GROOM WAS PRAYING WOULD STAY BURIED

The groom, Adrian Sinclair, stood frozen beside the altar.

His bride, Victoria, was still angry.

But Adrian was no longer looking at her.

He was staring at the velvet pouch in the little girl's hand.

That crest.

That symbol.

It belonged to the real Sinclair bloodline.

The one his father had sworn never existed anymore.

"Where did you get that?" Adrian asked, his voice suddenly cold.

The little girl hid behind the elderly maid.

"My mother gave it to me before she died."

A wave of whispers spread through the ballroom.

Victoria's face changed.

"Before she died?"

The maid's lips trembled.

"What was your mother's name?"

The little girl looked up with wet eyes.

"Elena."

The maid covered her mouth.

Then she began to cry.

Twenty-five years ago, Elena Sinclair had vanished after a fire destroyed the family's old mansion.

The official story said she died.

But the maid knew the truth.

Elena had been pregnant.

And someone inside the Sinclair family had made sure she disappeared.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Security. Take the child away."

But suddenly, the ballroom doors opened.

An old lawyer walked in, holding a black briefcase.

"I'm afraid nobody is taking her anywhere."

Everyone turned.

The lawyer looked directly at Adrian.

"That child is not a stranger."

He opened the briefcase and placed a document on the table.

"Her name is Lily Hart."

Then he looked at the guests and said the words that shattered the wedding.

"She is the granddaughter of Elena Sinclair..."

"...and the only rightful heir to the Sinclair fortune."

Victoria dropped her bouquet.

Adrian's face turned white.

Because the wedding was never about love.

It was about power.

Victoria was marrying Adrian to become queen of the Sinclair empire.

But now, in front of everyone, a poor little girl in worn-out shoes had become the biggest threat in the room.

The elderly maid pulled Lily close.

Adrian suddenly smiled, but it was the kind of smile that made people step back.

"This is nonsense."

The lawyer nodded calmly.

"Then you won't mind a DNA test."

The room went dead silent.

Victoria slowly turned to Adrian.

"Why are you afraid?"

Adrian didn't answer.

But the maid did.

"Because he knows."

Her voice was weak, but every word cut deep.

"He knows what happened the night Elena disappeared."

Adrian's eyes burned with rage.

"Be careful, old woman."

The maid lifted her chin.

"For twenty-five years, I kept your family's secret."

She looked down at Lily.

"But I won't let you bury another innocent child."

Then she opened the velvet pouch.

Inside was not jewelry.

Not money.

Not a photo.

It was a tiny silver key.

And attached to it was a note written in Elena's handwriting:

If my daughter ever finds my mother... open Room 17.

The lawyer's face changed.

The maid stopped breathing.

Victoria whispered, "What is Room 17?"

Adrian stepped backward.

For the first time all day...

The groom looked terrified.

Because Room 17 was the one place in the Sinclair estate nobody was allowed to enter.

And whatever was hidden inside...

May you like

was powerful enough to turn a wedding into a funeral.

To be continued...
