CHAPTER 1 — THE LAST THING SHE HAD LEFT

The bell above the pawn shop door rang softly.

It was barely eight in the morning, and the city was only beginning to wake up. The streets outside were still quiet, while inside the shop everything looked spotless. Jewelry sparkled beneath bright lights, expensive watches rested behind thick glass, and the assistant, Daniel Carter, was organizing paperwork before another ordinary day began.

Then she walked in.

An elderly woman.

Her coat was faded from years of wear. Her shoes were cracked. Her silver hair hadn't been brushed carefully, and dark circles under her eyes revealed countless sleepless nights.

She hesitated near the entrance, clutching something tightly inside her trembling hand.

Daniel looked up.

For a split second, he assumed what many people would.

Maybe she had found something that didn't belong to her.

Maybe she simply needed cash.

He smiled politely.

"Good morning. How can I help you today?"

The woman slowly stepped forward.

"I... I'd like to pawn something."

She carefully opened her hand.

A plain gold wedding ring rested in her palm.

Not flashy.

Not decorated with diamonds.

Just an old ring worn smooth by nearly fifty years of marriage.

Daniel gently picked it up.

He immediately noticed the inside engraving.

Forever Together – Michael & Eleanor – June 12, 1974

He looked back at her.

"Are you absolutely sure?"

For several seconds she couldn't answer.

Instead, she stared at the empty place on her finger.

Then tears quietly rolled down her cheeks.

"My husband passed away eight years ago."

She smiled through the pain.

"He never took this ring off... until the day he died."

She swallowed hard.

"When they buried him... I promised I'd never remove mine."

Daniel remained silent.

The woman continued.

"But our son..."

Her voice broke.

"Our only son."

She pulled several folded hospital papers from her bag.

"Cancer."

"The doctors say surgery must happen this week."

"I've sold our furniture."

"I've sold the television."

"I've sold my husband's tools."

"I even sold the little piano he bought for our son when he was seven."

She looked down.

"This ring..."

"...is the last memory I still have."

The entire shop became silent.

Even another customer waiting nearby stopped pretending not to listen.

Daniel carefully examined the ring.

Its value wasn't high.

Maybe enough to cover only a tiny fraction of the surgery.

Still...

Company policy was strict.

No exceptions.

He quietly completed the paperwork.

When everything was finished, he pushed the money across the counter.

The woman picked up the ring one final time.

She kissed it softly.

"I'm sorry, Michael..."

"I'm breaking my promise."

"But I'm saving our boy."

With trembling fingers, she placed it back onto the counter.

Then she accepted the money.

She thanked Daniel with heartbreaking sincerity.

And slowly turned toward the door.

Daniel watched her leave.

Something inside him refused to let her walk away.

Without thinking...

He called out—

"Ma'am... please wait."

May you like

The entire shop froze.

No one knew that the next few minutes would completely change every life inside that building.
