CHAPTER 2 — A DECISION THAT COULD COST HIM EVERYTHING

The elderly woman stopped.
She slowly turned around.
Daniel stepped out from behind the counter.
His manager, Mr. Wallace, immediately frowned.
"Daniel."
"What are you doing?"
Daniel ignored him.
He looked directly at Eleanor.
"Can I ask one question?"
She nodded.
"How much does the surgery cost?"
She hesitated.
Then quietly answered.
"Seventy-two thousand dollars."
The number echoed through the room.
Daniel looked at the tiny amount sitting on the counter.
The pawn value wasn't even two thousand.
It wouldn't save anyone.
It was only delaying heartbreak.
His chest tightened.
Without another word...
Daniel removed his own wallet.
He emptied every dollar he had onto the counter.
His emergency savings.
Rent money.
Everything.
"I'm buying your ring."
Eleanor stared at him.
"I... I don't understand."
"I'm not the pawn shop."
"I'm Daniel."
"And your husband wanted you to keep this ring forever."
Her hands shook violently.
"I can't take your money."
"You have your own life."
Daniel smiled.
"My mother died because nobody helped us in time."
"I promised myself..."
"If I ever had the chance to save another family..."
"...I wouldn't stay silent."
Tears filled Eleanor's eyes.
But before she could answer—
Mr. Wallace exploded.
"Daniel!"
"You're fired!"
"You embarrassed this business!"
"You violated company policy!"
Customers watched in stunned silence.
Daniel calmly removed his employee badge.
Placed it on the counter.
Then looked back at Eleanor.
"Please."
"Go save your son."
She collapsed into tears.
Unable to speak.
She hugged him tightly.
Unknown to everyone...
A man wearing a baseball cap had quietly witnessed everything from the corner of the shop.
He never said a word.
He simply walked outside...
And made one phone call.
"What I just saw..."
May you like
"...you need to come here immediately."
No one knew who he really was.
