CHAPTER 1 – The Snake That Should Have Been Left to Die

The desert was silent.

No birds.

No wind.

Nothing but endless golden dunes stretching beneath the blazing afternoon sun.

Twenty-six-year-old Emily Carter had dreamed of exploring this remote desert for years. Armed with nothing more than her backpack, camera, and an adventurous spirit, she wandered away from the tourist group to capture photos no one else would ever have.

That was when she heard it.

A strange scraping sound.

At first she thought it was the wind dragging sand across the rocks.

Then she heard it again.

Scrape... Thud... Scrape...

Curious, Emily followed the sound until she froze.

Lying among broken bottles and scattered trash was one of the largest white snakes she had ever seen.

It wasn't attacking.

It wasn't hunting.

It was suffering.

The snake violently slammed its head against the ground over and over, twisting its powerful body in agony.

Emily instinctively stepped backward.

Her tour guide's warning echoed inside her mind.

"Never touch any wild animal in this desert. Even the calmest creature can kill you in seconds."

Her heart pounded.

The snake could easily be venomous.

One bite...

That would be the end.

But something felt wrong.

The animal wasn't looking at her with aggression.

Its pale blue eyes were filled with pain.

Real pain.

Taking a deep breath, Emily slowly moved closer.

Every careful step made the snake tense, but it never tried to strike.

Then she finally saw it.

A jagged shard of thick green glass had pierced deep into the side of its skull.

Blood had dried around the wound.

Each desperate movement pushed the glass even deeper.

The snake was literally torturing itself trying to survive.

Emily's stomach turned.

Someone had probably thrown bottles into the desert years ago.

The snake had become an innocent victim.

"I can't just leave you..."

She whispered the words even though she knew how foolish they sounded.

Her hands trembled.

She removed her scarf and wrapped it around one hand for protection.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She reached toward the snake's head.

The giant reptile raised itself slightly.

Emily held her breath.

One wrong move...

One lightning-fast strike...

And everything would be over.

Instead...

The snake remained perfectly still.

Almost...

As if it understood.

She gently stabilized its head while gripping the exposed piece of glass.

The shard refused to move.

She pulled again.

Nothing.

Blood slowly began trickling down the snake's white scales.

"I'm sorry..."

Emily whispered.

Then, using every ounce of courage she had...

She gave one final careful pull.

The glass suddenly slid free.

The snake's entire body jerked violently.

Emily stumbled backward, dropping the bloody shard into the sand.

For several terrifying seconds...

Neither of them moved.

Then the snake slowly lifted its head.

Its pale blue eyes locked directly onto hers.

Emily smiled with relief.

"You'll be okay now..."

She took one cautious step backward.

Then another.

She turned to leave.

But before she could take a third step...

She heard a terrifying hiss behind her.

When she looked back...

May you like

The enormous white snake was racing straight toward her.

And it wasn't alone.
