CHAPTER 2 – The Chase No One Could Explain

Emily's blood ran cold.

Every survival instinct screamed at her.

RUN.

She sprinted across the burning sand as fast as she could.

Behind her came the unmistakable sound of scales gliding across the desert at shocking speed.

The giant white snake was chasing her.

Her lungs burned.

Her boots slipped over loose sand.

She dared one glance over her shoulder—

—and nearly screamed.

The snake wasn't slowing down.

It was gaining.

Emily's heart pounded louder than her footsteps.

"So this is how it ends..."

she thought.

She had saved its life.

Now it was going to kill her.

She pushed herself even harder until her foot struck a hidden rock beneath the sand.

She crashed face-first into the ground.

Her camera flew several feet away.

Before she could stand...

The snake arrived.

Towering over her, its massive body coiled only inches from her face.

Emily squeezed her eyes shut.

She waited for the bite.

One second...

Two...

Three...

Nothing happened.

Instead...

She heard something else.

A deep growl.

Then another.

Confused, Emily slowly opened her eyes.

Her heart nearly stopped.

Not far away stood three enormous desert wolves.

Their ribs showed through their dusty fur.

Their hungry eyes were fixed directly on Emily.

The snake wasn't looking at her anymore.

It was staring at them.

One wolf stepped forward.

The white snake instantly spread its body across Emily like a living shield.

Its loud hiss echoed through the canyon.

The wolves hesitated.

Then all three attacked at once.

What happened next looked impossible.

The wounded snake launched itself forward with astonishing speed.

It wrapped around the lead wolf, forcing it to the ground while striking at the others with incredible precision.

Sand exploded into the air.

Growls mixed with furious hissing.

Emily could only watch in disbelief.

The animal she believed wanted revenge...

...was risking its own life to protect hers.

After several brutal minutes, the wolves finally retreated into the rocky hills.

The desert fell silent once again.

The white snake was badly injured.

Fresh blood stained its once-pristine scales.

Breathing heavily, it slowly turned toward Emily.

This time there was no fear in its eyes.

Only something she never imagined a wild snake could show.

Recognition.

The snake gently touched the tip of its nose against Emily's trembling hand.

Then it slowly slithered toward a narrow canyon.

Halfway there...

It stopped.

Looked back.

And waited.

As if it wanted her to follow.

Emily hesitated.

Every instinct told her to return to the tourist camp.

But something deep inside whispered that this wasn't the end.
