Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the LibraryThe peace of the morning shattered at precisely 2:14 PM.

Marin was sitting in the massive mahogany-paneled library on the second floor, reading a book on art history while Murphy napped by the fireplace. Mave was resting her heavy head on Marin’s lap, letting out soft sighs of contentment.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors burst open.
Boon, Ronan’s chief of security, rushed in, blood dripping from a gash on his forehead, his suit jacket torn. "Boss! We've been compromised! They bypassed the outer perimeter gates using an EMP pulse!"
Before Boon could finish his sentence, the heavy glass windows facing the courtyard exploded inward in a shower of glittering shrapnel.
"Get down!" Boon roared, drawing his silenced pistol and diving behind an ornate mahogany desk.
Bullets peppered the library walls, chewing through priceless first-edition books and showering the room with wood splinters. Masked men clad in black tactical gear swarmed through the shattered windows, automatic rifles raised.
"Mave! Murphy! Stay!" Marin screamed, throwing herself off the chair and hitting the Persian rug.
Murphy didn't stay. At the sound of the gunfire, the gentle, lazy Neapolitan mastiff transformed into a ferocious beast of war. With a deafening roar that shook the glass remaining in the frames, Murphy leaped across the room, slamming straight into the chest of the lead tactical operative. The man went down hard, his rifle clattering across the floor as Murphy clamped his massive jaws around the tactical vest, shaking the intruder like a ragdoll.
At the same time, Mave—despite her months of starvation and grief—surged forward with unexpected agility, tackling a second gunman by the ankle and dragging him down.
"Marin! Take cover behind the pillar!" a voice shouted from the corridor.
Ronan Callahan appeared in the doorway, dual SIG Sauer pistols flashing in his hands. He moved with cold, calculated lethal precision. Bang. Bang. Two tactical operatives dropped instantly, neutralized with professional headshots.
"Boon! Secure the exits! Don't let a single rat escape!" Ronan ordered, firing another round as he advanced into the room, shielding Marin with his own body.
Marin pressed her back against the thick marble pillar, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Bullets whined past her ear, chipping the ancient stone.
Ronan slid across the hardwood floor, grabbing Marin by the waist and pulling her behind the massive stone hearth. His breath came fast, but his eyes were ice-cold and laser-focused.
"Are you hit?" Ronan demanded, his hands gripping her shoulders frantically, checking her for wounds.
"No! I'm fine! What about the dogs?" Marin cried out over the deafening rattle of gunfire.
"They're fighting like demons," Ronan growled, popping up from behind the hearth and firing two quick shots that dropped the final intruder in the room.
Silence descended on the library, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the heavy panting of Murphy and Mave standing victorious over the unconscious bodies of the assassins.

Ronan lowered his weapon, his chest heaving. He looked down at Marin, who was trembling violently in his arms. Without a second thought, he pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair.
"I told you," Ronan whispered fiercely against her ear. "You are not safe anywhere else. You belong here now."
