Chapter 7 - The Midnight ConfessionThe secure panic room deep within the bowels of Callahan Manor was a fortress of reinforced concrete and steel, completely cut off from the outside world. Monitors flickered across one entire wall, displaying live feeds of every corridor, garden, and perimeter gate.

Marin sat on a leather sofa, her legs pulled up to her chest. Murphy laid his heavy head across her shins, while Mave rested beside him.
Ronan paced the length of the room, his jaw clenched so tight muscles ticked along his cheek. He had just discovered that the sniper had escaped, disappearing into the woods before security could lock down the perimeter.
"It was someone on my inner council," Ronan muttered, slamming his fist against the steel desk. "Someone who knew the exact layout of the panic room, someone who had access to the master codes, someone who sat at my right hand for ten years."
"Ronan," Marin said softly.
He stopped pacing and looked at her. The harsh fluorescent lights of the bunker caught the deep exhaustion etched into his face. For all his power, wealth, and ruthlessness, he looked entirely human—and completely vulnerable.
Marin stood up, walking slowly across the room until she stood right in front of him. Without hesitation, she reached out with her bandaged hands and gently placed them on his chest.
"You can't fight everyone alone," Marin said, her voice filled with an unexpected tenderness. "You think having power means carrying the whole world on your shoulders until they crush you. That's why you built this fortress. Not to keep people out... but to keep yourself from breaking."
Ronan stared down at her, stunned. For a long moment, the air between them thickened, charged with an undeniable, electric tension that had been building since the day they met.
"You walked into a burning house for a dog," Ronan whispered hoarsely, his hand rising to cup the side of her face, his thumb gently tracing her cheekbone. "And now you're standing in front of a monster, trying to save his soul."
"You're not a monster, Ronan," Marin breathed, her eyes locking onto his lips. "You're just a man who forgot how to trust."
Ronan couldn't resist any longer. He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest, and crashed his lips down onto hers.

The kiss was fierce, desperate, and filled with all the suppressed passion, fear, and survival instincts of the past week. Marin gasped into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his neck, pressing herself against him as if anchoring herself to the only real thing in a world gone mad.
Murphy let out a soft, approving woof from the corner, while Mave rested her chin on her paws, watching over them like a guardian angel.
