CHAPTER 1 — The Last Trip

The first thing everyone noticed after Daniel Ashford's accident was not the wheelchair.
It was the silence.
Before the crash, Daniel had been impossible to ignore. At forty-three, he had built Ashford Global into one of the fastest-growing technology companies in America. Investors chased him. Reporters followed him. His speeches inspired thousands.
Then a truck crossed the center line on a rain-soaked highway outside Seattle.
Daniel survived.
His legs did not.
Within six months, board meetings happened without him. Friends stopped calling. Invitations disappeared.
Only one person remained by his side.
His wife.
Or so everyone believed.
Victoria Ashford smiled for cameras while pushing Daniel's wheelchair through charity galas. Magazine covers praised her as "The Devoted Wife."
No one saw what happened after the photographers left.
No one heard the insults.
"You can't even pour your own coffee."
"You've become a prison."
"I didn't marry someone who needs permission just to get into bed."
Daniel never argued.
He simply lowered his eyes.
Every cruel word buried itself deeper than the last.
What Victoria never realized was that silence is often mistaken for weakness.
Weeks later, Daniel noticed small things.
A second phone she never answered around him.
Perfume that wasn't hers lingering in the SUV.
Late-night messages hidden behind a locked screen.
One evening he woke from a nightmare and rolled toward the kitchen.
Laughter drifted through the open patio door.
Victoria stood outside with Ryan Mercer—Daniel's former business partner and closest friend.
Their hands were intertwined.
"I can't wait much longer," Ryan whispered.
Victoria smiled.
"You won't have to."
Daniel backed away before they saw him.
That night he didn't cry.
He didn't scream.
Instead, he opened a hidden laptop no one knew existed.
He transferred security recordings.
Encrypted financial files.
Insurance documents.
Private emails.
Then he sent one short message to someone whose number he had never deleted.
If anything happens to me... open Package Black.
No explanation.
Just those six words.
The reply came almost instantly.
Understood. Stay alive.
Daniel stared at the screen.
For the first time in months...
He smiled.
Three days later Victoria surprised him with an invitation.
"A weekend getaway."
Daniel looked confused.
"You hate traveling."
"I've changed."
She kissed his forehead.
"I miss us."
Her voice sounded perfect.
Almost rehearsed.
Ryan would join them, she explained, because he knew the hiking trails around Silver Falls Canyon.
Daniel quietly agreed.
The drive lasted four hours.
Victoria sang with the radio.
Ryan joked from the driver's seat.
Anyone watching would have believed they were old friends enjoying a peaceful vacation.
Only Daniel noticed the map.
They weren't driving toward the tourist overlook.
They were heading somewhere isolated.
Where there were no cameras.
No crowds.
Only cliffs.
As the waterfall thundered somewhere beyond the trees, Daniel looked into the rearview mirror.
Ryan caught his eyes.
Neither man smiled.
Something terrible was about to happen.
Daniel already knew.
May you like
But neither of them had the slightest idea...
They were walking into a trap of his own making.
