CHAPTER 1 — The Perfect Murder

Everyone believed Richard Lawson's life had ended the day his wheelchair disappeared over the edge of Raven Falls.
The newspapers called it a tragic accident.
His grieving wife cried before television cameras.
His best friend stood beside her, promising to help her through the difficult days ahead.
No one suspected they had planned every second.
Not the police.
Not the rescue team.
Not even Richard's own lawyers.
Six months earlier...
Richard Lawson had been one of the richest businessmen in the state.
At forty-eight, he had built an empire worth hundreds of millions.
Luxury hotels.
Construction companies.
Private investments.
Everything he touched became gold.
His wife, Victoria, loved the luxury.
Designer clothes.
Private jets.
Charity galas.
Magazine covers.
To the outside world, they looked like the perfect couple.
But behind the mansion doors...
Everything had already fallen apart.
After Richard's terrible car accident, his entire life changed overnight.
His spinal injuries left him confined to a wheelchair.
Doctors weren't sure he would ever walk again.
The man who once commanded boardrooms now needed help simply getting dressed.
His confidence disappeared.
His laughter faded.
His business partners slowly stopped visiting.
Only Victoria remained.
Or so everyone believed.
At first she acted like the devoted wife.
She smiled for photographs.
Held his hand during interviews.
Spoke about unconditional love.
But once the cameras disappeared...
So did her kindness.
"You've become useless," she whispered one evening while pushing his wheelchair into the bedroom.
"You don't even realize how much of my life you've ruined."
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I never asked for this."
"No," she answered coldly.
"But I'm the one paying the price."
Weeks later...
She stopped eating dinner with him.
Stopped talking.
Stopped pretending.
She spent more and more time "working late."
Richard never questioned it.
He trusted her.
Until one rainy afternoon.
His housekeeper accidentally entered Victoria's study while cleaning.
She found two wine glasses.
A man's expensive jacket.
And a silver lighter engraved with the initials:
M.C.
The housekeeper quietly handed the lighter to Richard.
"I think you should know."
Richard said nothing.
But that evening...
He hired a private investigator.
Three days later...
The report arrived.
Every page felt like another knife through his heart.
Victoria wasn't alone.
She had been having an affair for almost two years.
With Michael Carter.
Richard's closest friend.
The same man who had stood beside him during surgery.
The same man who had promised,
"I'll always take care of your family."
Photographs showed them kissing.
Traveling together.
Laughing.
Holding hands.
Then came something even worse.
Audio recordings.
One conversation froze Richard's blood.
Victoria laughed.
"Divorce is impossible."
Michael asked,
"Then how do we get the money?"
A long silence followed.
Then...
Victoria quietly answered,
"Accidents happen."
Richard closed his eyes.
For several minutes he couldn't breathe.
The investigator looked at him carefully.
"Sir... I think your life is in danger."
Richard simply nodded.
"I know."
Instead of confronting them...
He made another decision.
He quietly transferred control of every company into a confidential trust.
Every account.
Every property.
Every investment.
Only one lawyer knew.
If Richard died unexpectedly...
Victoria would inherit almost nothing.
Instead...
Everything would automatically be donated to children's hospitals and veterans' rehabilitation centers.
Then Richard waited.
He wanted proof.
And proof came faster than expected.
One evening Victoria entered his room smiling for the first time in months.
"How about a little vacation?"
Richard looked surprised.
"A vacation?"
"Just us... and Michael."
"He knows a beautiful waterfall."
"It'll be good for your mental health."
Richard looked into her eyes.
For the first time...
He saw absolutely no love.
Only calculation.
He quietly smiled.
"I'd love to go."
Three days later...
They arrived at Raven Falls.
Mist covered the cliffs.
The roaring waterfall drowned every sound.
No witnesses.
No security cameras.
Perfect.
Victoria slowly pushed Richard's wheelchair toward the edge.
Michael followed behind.
Richard suddenly spoke.
"I know."
Both of them stopped.
"I know everything."
"The affair."
"The recordings."
"The plan."
Victoria's face hardened.
"So?"
"I'll sign everything over."
"I'll disappear."
"You'll never see me again."
"Please..."
"I don't want to die."
Michael looked at Victoria.
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
Richard whispered,
"You don't have to do this..."
Victoria leaned close to his ear.
"You should've died in that first accident."
Then Michael shoved the wheelchair with all his strength.
The wheels bounced once...
Twice...
Then disappeared over the cliff.
Victoria screamed.
Michael shouted for help.
Their performance was flawless.
Until...
Less than one minute later...
A deafening helicopter appeared above the waterfall.
And someone inside pointed directly at them.
May you like
The nightmare had only just begun...
