Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND AT GUNPOINTThe entire room froze.

Director Vance slowly turned around, his smug corporate smile instantly vanishing when he saw the dark barrel of the gun pointed directly at his chest.

"Robert! Have you completely lost your mind?!" Vance hissed, his voice finally losing its polished edge. "Put that weapon down before I have you locked away in a federal black site for the rest of your miserable life!"

Robert’s hands were shaking so violently that the gun barrel rattled against the doorframe. He looked terrible—his tie was crooked, his shirt was untucked, and his eyes were wide with unadulterated panic. He didn't look like a successful corporate executive anymore; he looked like a cornered animal.

"Shut up, Vance! Just shut your mouth!" Robert yelled, his voice cracking hysterically. He kept his eyes locked on me, his expression a desperate, pathetic mask of pleading. "Cynthia... please. Put the phone down. Put the charts down. You don't understand what these people are capable of. They aren't a tech company—they’re a front for a defense contractor. If that device is removed prematurely, or if the encryption is breached, it transmits a localized self-destruct pulse. It would vaporize the surrounding tissue. It would kill her!"

My blood ran instantly cold. I looked back at Dr. Lawson, my eyes demanding the truth.

Dr. Lawson swallowed hard, slowly nodding his head. "He... he's not entirely lying, Mrs. Thorne. Our telemetry scan showed an encrypted micro-fuse attached to the capsule. If tampering is detected without the master corporate decryption key, the internal battery releases a localized chemical burn..."

Maya let out a small, terrified gasp and buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"You put a bomb inside our daughter," I whispered, the words tasting like ash and poison in my mouth. "You put a literal explosive tracking device inside a child."

"It wasn't a bomb! It was a secure data-storage node!" Robert shouted defensively, taking a frantic step into the room and keeping the gun pointed generally at the floor between Vance and us. "They paid me two million dollars upfront, Cynthia! We bought our house! We paid off our debts! We were supposed to be safe! But then Maya started growing too fast, and her metabolic changes caused the sensor to misalign, and the pain started..."

"And instead of helping her, you told me she was faking it," I said. Every ounce of love, respect, or marital bond I had ever felt for Robert evaporated, leaving behind a cold, burning core of pure hatred. "You watched her waste away. You watched her cry herself to sleep. And every single night, you sat across from her at the dinner table and called her a liar."

"I was protecting our family!" Robert sobbed, a pathetic tear cutting a clean path through the sweat on his cheek.

"No, Robert," Director Vance said coldly, his composure miraculously returning as he slowly reached inside his suit jacket. "You were protecting your own skin. And now, you’ve made a fatal mistake."

Vance’s hand pulled out a sleek, heavy-duty mobile satellite transmitter. Before Robert could react, Vance pressed a flashing red button on the device’s face.

A loud, high-pitched BEEP echoed through Exam Room 4.

On the heart monitor beside Maya's bed, the green line suddenly flatlined into a straight, terrifying screech. Maya clutched her stomach, let out a piercing, agonized scream, and collapsed backward onto the exam table as her body violently convulsed.
