CHAPTER 2 — THE PHONE CALL THAT STOPPED EVERYTHING
The old woman sat quietly on a bench across the street.
She opened her handbag.
Inside was a simple flip phone.
She dialed one number.
"Hello, sweetheart."
A man's voice immediately answered.
"Grandma? Is everything okay?"
For the first time all morning...
Her voice cracked.
"They wouldn't let me buy the car."
The line went silent.
"What happened?"
She explained everything.
The insults.
The laughter.
The humiliation.
Every word.
The man listened without interrupting.
When she finished...
His voice became frighteningly calm.
"Stay where you are."
"I'm coming."
Back at the dealership, Derek was celebrating another sale.
Then something unusual happened.
Employees began looking outside.
A convoy of black luxury vehicles was pulling into the parking lot.
One.
Two.
Five.
Ten.
The entire entrance suddenly filled with expensive cars.
Derek frowned.
"What the hell is this?"
The front doors opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
Everyone immediately recognized him.
Their faces turned white.
It was Michael Sterling.
One of the wealthiest businessmen in the state.
Owner of Sterling Automotive Group.
The parent company that owned dozens of dealerships.
Including this one.
The general manager rushed forward.
"Mr. Sterling! We had no idea you were coming!"
Michael ignored him.
His eyes scanned the showroom.
Then he asked one simple question.
"Where is Derek?"
The salesman froze.
Michael walked directly toward him.
"You insulted an elderly woman today?"
Derek laughed nervously.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
Michael stared at him.
"No misunderstanding."
The room felt colder.
"Tell me exactly what you said."
Derek's mouth went dry.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the front doors opened again.
The elderly woman entered.
The entire showroom turned toward her.
Michael immediately walked over.
And to everyone's shock...
He wrapped his arms around her.
"Grandma."
The silence was deafening.
Derek's face lost all color.
His knees nearly gave out.
The woman he had mocked.
The woman he called poor.
The woman he threw out.
