CHAPTER 1: THE RESCUE THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED

The forest ranger had spent years living alone.

His name was Ethan Walker, and after losing his wife and young daughter in a tragic car accident five years earlier, he had abandoned the crowded world and buried himself in the wilderness.

The forest became his refuge.

The animals became his only neighbors.

And silence became his closest companion.

Every morning, Ethan patrolled the frozen forests surrounding Blackwater Lake.

The lake was notorious.

Its surface often appeared solid, but beneath the snow hid dangerous patches of thin ice capable of swallowing anything unlucky enough to step onto them.

That afternoon, a strange sound broke the stillness.

A desperate cry.

Ethan followed it toward the center of the lake.

What he found froze his blood.

A massive she-wolf was trapped in icy water.

She was heavily pregnant.

Every attempt to climb out ended with the ice cracking beneath her weight.

She was dying.

Ethan knew better than anyone how dangerous wolves could be.

A cornered predator was capable of killing a man.

Yet when he looked into her terrified eyes, he saw something else.

Fear.

Pain.

And a desperate desire to survive.

Ignoring every instinct, Ethan crawled across the ice.

The freezing water splashed over his arms as he grabbed the wolf's thick fur.

The animal growled weakly but did not attack.

For several agonizing minutes, man and beast fought together against death.

Finally, Ethan managed to drag her onto solid ice.

The she-wolf collapsed.

Barely breathing.

For a moment they simply stared at each other.

Then something strange happened.

Instead of running away, the wolf slowly lowered her head.

Almost as if she understood what he had done.

Then she disappeared into the forest.

Ethan returned home soaked and exhausted.

He believed the story was over.

He was wrong.

Three nights later, he woke up at exactly 2:17 a.m.

Something was outside.

Slow footsteps circled his cabin.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

He grabbed his flashlight.

Outside, standing at the edge of the trees, were six wolves.

And in the center stood the pregnant she-wolf.

Watching him.

Not moving.

Not blinking.

Just staring.

Ethan felt a chill crawl down his spine.

The next morning they were gone.

But the following night they returned.

And the night after that.

Every single evening, the pack gathered around his cabin.

Watching.

Waiting.

As if they wanted something.

Ethan began sleeping with his rifle beside his bed.

The wolves never attacked.

Never growled.

Never crossed the property line.

Yet their presence became more terrifying with each passing night.

Then one morning, he found something impossible on his porch.

A fresh deer carcass.

Left directly in front of his door.

The wolves had brought him a gift.

And that was only the beginning.
