CHAPTER 4 — "The Night They Tried to Destroy Everything"

Three nights later...
Margaret woke to the smell of smoke.
At first she thought she was dreaming.
Then she heard glass shatter.
"Ethan!"
She rushed toward his bedroom.
Dark smoke was already pouring beneath the door.
Outside...
Flames climbed the side of the garage.
Someone had set the house on fire.
"Ethan!"
She pounded desperately.
He burst out seconds later.
"What happened?"
Before either of them could react...
A loud explosion rocked the backyard.
Windows shattered.
The power went out.
The entire neighborhood was thrown into darkness.
Neighbors rushed outside screaming.
Someone immediately called emergency services.
Ethan grabbed his mother.
"Stay behind me!"
The two escaped through the kitchen just seconds before part of the roof collapsed.
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
The flames were finally brought under control.
As investigators searched the property...
One firefighter called out.
"Sir!"
"You need to see this."
Near the broken fence lay a half-melted gasoline container.
It hadn't been an accident.
Someone had deliberately started the fire.
Detectives immediately opened a criminal investigation.
...
The next morning...
News helicopters circled above the burned house.
Reporters repeated one question.
"Who wanted Ethan Carter dead?"
The answer came faster than anyone expected.
A neighbor's security camera had captured a luxury black SUV driving slowly past the house just minutes before the fire started.
The license plate matched a vehicle registered to Whitmore Holdings.
Vanessa's family.
Police arrived at the Whitmore mansion with a search warrant.
Vanessa stared in disbelief.
"I didn't do anything!"
Her father remained calm.
"You have no proof."
But the detectives weren't finished.
Inside his office they discovered burner phones.
Large cash withdrawals.
Messages between him and a private investigator.
Then...
One final recording.
The investigator's voice was unmistakable.
"Don't hurt the old woman."
"Just scare Ethan enough to make him sell the company."
There was a long pause.
Then another man's voice replied,
"If things go wrong... accidents happen."
The room fell silent.
Vanessa looked at her father.
"You told me we'd only pressure him..."
He never answered.
Instead...
He quietly asked for his lawyer.
For the first time...
Vanessa realized she had never truly known the man who raised her.
Her father hadn't only planned a business takeover.
He had been willing to risk innocent lives.
...
That afternoon...
Ethan stood outside the remains of his childhood home.
Everything was gone.
His old school trophies.
Family photographs.
His mother's wedding album.
The handmade birthday cards she had saved since first grade.
Burned to ashes.
Margaret quietly picked up a blackened picture frame.
"I couldn't save your father's photograph."
She began crying.
Ethan gently took the frame from her.
"No."
"You saved the only thing that matters."
"You."
At that moment, one detective approached.
"We've frozen the Whitmore family's business accounts."
"There will be arrests soon."
Ethan nodded.
"I don't want revenge."
"I want justice."
The detective smiled faintly.
"Sometimes..."
"They're the same thing."
As police vehicles sped toward the Whitmore estate...
Vanessa stared through the mansion window.
For the first time in her privileged life...
She realized that one slap had not ruined a wedding.
It had uncovered years of arrogance, greed, and lies—and now every secret her family had buried was rising to the surface.
