Chapter 1 - The ArrivalThe rain hammered against the tinted windows of the Maybach as it pulled up to the Grand Horizon Hotel’s VIP entrance. Exactly fifty-five minutes had passed since my call to Arthur Reed.

Inside the opulent ballroom, the string quartet was sliding into the third movement of Vivaldi’s Winter, a chillingly ironic soundtrack for the disaster my family was about to face. I stood in the hotel’s marble-pillored lobby, my reflection in the polished gold elevator doors showing a thin, crimson streak across my left cheek where my mother’s diamond-studded ring had broken the skin. My hair was still pinned up in the sleek chignon I’d worn for the ceremony, but my eyes were entirely devoid of the polite submission they had expected.

The glass doors slid open, and Arthur Reed stepped inside, bringing the crisp, damp scent of the storm with him.

At seventy-two, Arthur was a legend in the city’s corporate landscape—a razor-sharp venture capitalist and legal titan who had quietly orchestrated my father’s corporate rise thirty years ago. He wore a charcoal bespoke wool coat, a silver silk tie, and carried a thick, leather-bound briefcase like an executioner’s axe. Two junior partners from his firm flanked him, clutching tablets preloaded with high-resolution digital files.

"Elena," Arthur’s deep, gravelly voice cut through the hum of the hotel lobby. He stopped in front of me, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the swollen, purplish bruise on my cheek. His gaze darkened from professional detachment to icy fury. "Did she use a ring?"

"Yes," I replied, my voice steady. "In front of two hundred guests. There are multiple high-definition recordings, including the venue's professional livestream."

Arthur let out a slow, terrifying breath. "Greed always makes them sloppy. Your father forgot whose name is actually on the master deed of every square inch of this property—and his corporate portfolio. Shall we go in and ruin a wedding?"

"Let's," I said.
