CHAPTER 5 — The Mistress Who Became a Witness
Vanessa disappeared the same night Daniel was arrested.
Everyone assumed she ran because she was guilty.
But Sophia knew fear when she saw it.
And Vanessa had looked terrified.
Two days later, Sophia received a message from an unknown number.
He said if I talked, I would vanish too.
Sophia stared at the screen.
Then another message came.
Meet me at St. Anne’s Church. Alone.
Richard warned her not to go.
Evelyn begged her not to risk herself.
But Sophia went anyway.
The church was empty except for candles flickering near the altar.
Vanessa sat in the back pew wearing sunglasses and a scarf, though it was raining outside.
Her perfect makeup was gone.
Her hands shook.
“I thought Daniel loved me,” Vanessa whispered.
Sophia sat beside her.
“He loved control.”
Vanessa began crying.
“He told me you were unstable. That you were stealing from the family. That his mother hated you because you were dangerous.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Daniel had not only used Evelyn’s cruelty.
He had fed it.
Vanessa pulled a small drive from her purse.
“I recorded him.”
Sophia’s eyes opened.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me everything. The accounts. The forged signatures. The plan to leave the country. And…”
She hesitated.
Sophia’s stomach tightened.
“And what?”
Vanessa whispered, “He said your transplant story made you useful.”
Sophia went still.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“He knew you saved him. He knew before he married you.”
The church seemed to lose all sound.
Sophia could barely breathe.
Daniel hadn’t discovered the truth after the wedding.
He had chosen her because of it.
Because he believed her kindness made her easy to manipulate.
For the first time, Sophia cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just silently, as if something inside her had finally broken.
Vanessa handed her the drive.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophia took it.
Then she said something Vanessa never expected.
“Help us tell the truth.”
Vanessa nodded.
