CHAPTER 1 — The Bracelet That Stopped Manhattan

Manhattan never slowed down.
People rushed beneath towering buildings without looking at the strangers beside them.
Taxi horns echoed through the freezing afternoon.
Coffee cups steamed in hurried hands.
No one noticed suffering anymore.
Until one little boy did.
Seven-year-old Ethan suddenly let go of his mother's hand.
"Mom! Wait!"
Before Victoria could react, her shopping bags crashed onto the sidewalk.
"Ethan!"
He was already running.
Not toward the toy store.
Not toward the candy shop.
Straight toward a piece of dirty cardboard lying against an abandoned brick building.
A child slept there.
Tiny.
Thin.
Curled beneath an old blanket that barely covered his body.
His sneakers had holes.
His fingers were blue from the cold.
Without thinking twice, Ethan knelt beside him.
He carefully removed the sandwich from his backpack and placed it into the sleeping boy's hands.
"You look hungry."
The homeless child slowly opened his eyes.
For one impossible second...
Time stopped.
Gasps spread across the sidewalk.
Phones lowered.
Because the homeless boy looked exactly like Ethan.
Same brown eyes.
Same freckles.
Same smile.
Only starvation had hollowed his face.
Victoria finally reached them...
Then froze.
Her heart stopped beating.
"No..."
The word barely escaped her lips.
The homeless child stared directly at her.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Almost...
Expectant.
"You came back," he whispered.
Victoria staggered backward.
Her breathing became uneven.
Seven years of carefully buried memories exploded inside her mind.
Ethan looked from the homeless child to his mother.
"Mom... why does he look like me?"
She couldn't answer.
The homeless boy slowly pushed back his sleeve.
Around his tiny wrist...
A faded hospital identification bracelet.
Old.
Worn.
But still readable.
Victoria collapsed onto the freezing concrete.
Tears flooded her face.
Her voice shattered into pieces.
"They told me..."
"They told me only one baby survived."
The entire sidewalk fell silent.

Nobody knew...
A secret buried inside one delivery room was about to destroy lives that had been built on a lie.
