Chapter 1 - The Paralyzing Truth

The silence in the private alcove was deafening. Richard watched as Vanessa’s pupils began to dilate, her composure fracturing like a spiderweb under pressure. Her graceful movements turned jerky, her fingers losing their grip on the crystal glass.
"Vanessa?" Richard’s voice was as cold as the ice in his bucket. "You seem… unwell."
Vanessa tried to speak, but her tongue felt like lead. Her eyes bulged as she looked at her own plate, then at Richard’s untouched dessert. A horrific realization dawned on her: the plates had been switched. She had consumed her own poison.
"R-Richard," she slurred, her throat constricting. "Call… help…"
Richard stood up, looming over her. The "charming" billionaire was gone; in his place was a man who moved empires. "Help? Like the help you intended for me? Or the help that little girl needed, the one you had your hired thugs kick out onto the streets?"
Vanessa collapsed against the velvet chair, her breathing ragged. She reached for her handbag, desperate for her phone, but Richard caught her wrist—hard. He didn’t care about the gasps from the nearby tables. He didn’t care about the status or the decorum.

As the poison took full effect, Vanessa’s vision blurred. The last thing she saw before losing consciousness wasn't a doctor, but Richard pulling out a digital recorder and placing it on the table.
