Chapter 2 - The Girl from the Shadows

Two hours earlier, in the loading bay of the restaurant, the twelve-year-old girl, Maya, was being pinned against a brick wall by two of Vanessa’s private security contractors.

"Who sent you?" the guard growled.

Maya didn't cry. She stared into the dark alley, her eyes burning with a desperate intelligence. She wasn't just a street kid; she was a witness. She worked in the kitchen's waste management wing, a place invisible to the patrons above. She had seen Vanessa drop a crystalline powder—a lethal dose of cardiac glycoside—into the soufflé behind the chef's back.

"Let me go!" Maya kicked the guard’s shin.

Just then, a black town car screeched to a halt. A man in a sharp suit—Richard’s head of security, Marcus—stepped out. He didn't look at the guards. He looked at Maya.

"She told Mr. Blackwood," Marcus said, his voice flat. "He’s safe. Now, tell me everything you saw in that kitchen, or you’re going to be the one taking the fall for this."

Maya pulled a hidden smartphone from her hoodie. "I didn't just see it. I recorded it."

The game had changed. Richard wasn't just reacting; he was orchestrating a trap. The girl wasn't a random bystander; she was a whistleblower who had been trying to get Richard’s attention for weeks.
