Victor reacted instantly, his corporate defense mechanism kicking into high gear. He stepped back from the bed, raising his hands innocently, his face transforming back into the cooperative, concerned son-in-law in the blink of an eye.
"Marcus! Thank God you're here," Victor said, his voice rich with false relief. "We've been so worried. The doctors said she was stable, but she's been experiencing intense delusions. She's throwing around wild accusations, claiming we attacked her—"
"Save it, Victor," Marcus interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. He didn't even look at Victor; instead, he walked straight to the side of my bed, placing a reassuring hand over my uninjured hand. "Are you alright, Eleanor?"
"I am now, Marcus," I whispered. "Did you get the file?"
"I did. The cloud upload was successful the moment your device connected to the ambulance’s emergency Wi-Fi network," Marcus said. He turned around, facing Victor and Elise, who were now backing toward the corner of the room as the two police officers moved to flank the exit.
Elise looked panicked, her eyes darting between Marcus and the officers. "What cloud upload? What are you talking about? Mom is sick! She fell!"
Marcus opened his briefcase and pulled out a slim digital audio player. He pressed a button, and the quiet hospital room was suddenly filled with the clear, unmistakable sound of Elise's voice.
“You stupid old woman,” the recording hissed. “You ruined everything. Get up! Get out! It’s three million. You’re nothing.”
Then came the sound of a heavy struggle, the wet, sickening slap of skin against stone, and Victor’s voice ringing out clearly: “Maybe now you’ll learn.”
The audio played for thirty agonizing seconds. The silence that followed was suffocating.
Elise looked as if she had been struck by lightning. Her mouth hung open, her face completely drained of color. She looked at Victor, but Victor wasn't looking at her. He was staring at the recording device, his mind frantically trying to find a legal loophole, a way out, a defense strategy.
"That... that's edited," Victor stammered, his polished veneer finally cracking, exposing the raw panic underneath. "That's a manipulated recording. It won't hold up in court. You can't prove the context—"
"This recording was captured by a forensic-grade digital audio device hardwired into Eleanor's medical alert pendant," Marcus explained calmly. "The device automatically streams to my firm's secure server when a high-impact fall is detected. The metadata is encrypted, time-stamped, and completely unalterable. And it matches the security footage from the neighbors' smart doorbells across the street perfectly."
One of the police officers, a seasoned sergeant with a grim expression, stepped forward. "Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic abuse of an elderly dependent, and attempted grand larceny."
"What?!" Elise shrieked, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. "You can't arrest me! I'm her daughter! This is my house! That money belongs to my family!"
"It belonged to your father, Elise," I said, my voice strong, echoing off the sterile walls. "And he left it to me to ensure this family was taken care of. Not to fund a parasite who would throw her own mother onto the driveway for a check."
The officers moved in, pulling Elise's arms behind her back. The metallic clink of handcuffs locking around her wrists sounded incredibly satisfying. She began to cry—loud, ugly, theatrical tears, thrashing against the officer's grip.
"Mom! Please! Tell them it was a mistake!" she begged, her eyes locked onto mine. "Victor made me do it! It was his idea! He said we needed the money or the investors would ruin us! Mom, please! I'm your baby!"
I looked away, my heart breaking for the little girl she used to be, but completely hardened against the monster she had become.
Victor didn't fight. When the second officer moved to handcuff him, he simply extended his wrists, his eyes locked onto me with a lethal, burning hatred.
"This isn't over, Eleanor," Victor whispered as he was led toward the door. "You think you've won? My lawyers will have me out on bail before the sun comes up. You still have to prove everything in front of a judge. And when I get out... I will strip you of every single thing you own."
"Try it, Victor," I said quietly.
As the door closed behind them, leaving only Marcus and me in the quiet room, the weight of the day finally crashed over me. I let out a long, ragged breath, a single tear escaping my eye and soaking into the bandage on my temple.

"What happens now, Marcus?" I asked.
Marcus closed his briefcase, a grim, determined smile playing on his lips. "Now, Eleanor, we don't just go to the police. We go to the press. And then, we pull the rug out from under his entire empire."
