Chapter 4 - The Public Ruin

Viral Hook Title: 📺 ACCUSED ON LIVE TELEVISION! THE MONSTER SON-IN-LAW THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO GET BAIL, BUT THE PRESS ALREADY SEEN THE VIDEO! 😱🔥 #Scandal #BreakingNews #Exposed #Karma
By 8:00 AM the next morning, the story had completely exploded.
Marcus hadn't just leaked the audio; he had released the entire file, alongside the medical reports and the neighbor's doorbell footage, to every major news outlet in the state. The narrative of the "charming, philanthropic billionaire son-in-law" who beat and discarded his grieving, elderly mother-in-law was too juicy for the media to ignore.
I sat up in my hospital bed, watching the wall-mounted television screen.
A prominent news anchor stood outside the local precinct, a swarm of reporters flashing cameras behind her.
"...shocking developments this morning in the high-profile arrest of Victor Hale, CEO of Hale Global Investments, and his wife, Elise Hale. Initial reports suggested that Eleanor Vance, widow of the late tech mogul Arthur Vance, had suffered a tragic fall. However, bombshell audio and video evidence released early this morning paints a horrifying picture of domestic abuse, greed, and financial coercion..."
The screen cut to the doorbell footage. It was grainy, but clear enough to show Elise violently dragging me across the stone porch by my hair, throwing me onto the concrete driveway, while Victor stood in the doorway, hands in his pockets, smiling.
The contrast between that footage and the charity gala photos they displayed next to it was devastating. Victor’s public image was completely annihilated within a matter of hours.
The door to my hospital room opened, and Marcus walked in, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a thick stack of legal documents. He looked exhausted but triumphant.
"They're done, Eleanor," Marcus said, sitting in the chair beside my bed. "Victor’s defense team tried to secure a private arraignment and a low bail configuration. They offered two million dollars cash for his release. But the judge had already seen the news. Bail was denied for both of them. They are being held in maximum security until the preliminary hearing next week."
"And his business?" I asked.
"Hale Global Investments is in a state of absolute collapse," Marcus smiled, taking a sip of his coffee. "The moment the audio dropped—specifically the part where Victor admitted the 'foundation' was actually a cover for his 'investment fund'—the Securities and Exchange Commission launched an emergency audit. They froze all of his corporate bank accounts. By noon today, three of his major institutional investors pulled out, demanding immediate liquidation of their assets. Victor is running on empty. He doesn't have the cash to pay his lawyers, let alone fight a criminal trial."
I felt a profound sense of relief, but it was hollow. "And Elise?"
Marcus’s expression softened into pity. "She’s breaking down in the holding cell. She’s trying to pin the entire financial fraud on Victor, claiming she was a victim of coercive control. But the recording of her dragging you across the floor completely invalidates her victim defense. The D.A. is pursuing maximum sentences for both of them—ten years for assault, and up to twenty for financial exploitation."
I leaned my head back against the pillow, closing my eyes. I could still feel the phantom sensation of Elise's fingers twisted into my hair, the cold stone of the driveway scratching my knees.
"They thought I was weak because I was quiet," I whispered.
"They mistook your grace for weakness," Marcus corrected gently. "But we aren't finished yet. There’s one more thing we need to take care of. Victor’s primary line of credit for his investment firm was secured using a fraudulent deed to your mansion. He forged Arthur’s signature three weeks before he died."
My eyes snapped open. "He tried to steal my house?"
"He did steal it, on paper," Marcus said, his voice turning deadly serious. "But because the deed was forged, the bank is going to foreclose on the loan, which means the house will be seized by the state unless we execute an emergency counter-suit to invalidate the lien. We need to go to his corporate headquarters. Today."
"I'm coming with you," I said, throwing the hospital blanket off my legs.

"Eleanor, you're in no condition to leave the hospital," Marcus protested, standing up.
"I am perfectly capable of walking, Marcus," I said, my voice dripping with steel as I stood up, ignoring the sharp pain in my ribs. "Victor Hale wanted to take my home. I want to look at his executives, his board, and his empty office when I take it back."
