The glass towers of Hale Global Investments loomed over the city financial district like an obsidian monument to greed.

I walked through the double glass doors of the penthouse boardroom wearing a simple black dress, my left arm still tightly bound in the medical splint, a large beige bandage covering the stitches on my temple. I didn't look like a victim. I looked like an executioner.

Marcus walked half a step behind me, his briefcase open, exposing the legal documents that would dismantle the company within the hour.

Inside the boardroom, twelve members of the board of directors sat in frantic, hushed conversation. The room was in complete chaos—papers were scattered across the mahogany table, laptops were open to plunging stock charts, and two corporate lawyers were shouting into speakerphones.

When the door swung open, the room fell dead silent.

"Mrs. Vance," the chief operating officer, a panicked-looking man named Henderson, stuttered, standing up from his chair. "What... what are you doing here? This is a private board meeting. We are currently navigating a corporate crisis—"

"You are navigating a funeral, Mr. Henderson," I said, walking to the head of the table—the seat that Victor had occupied just twenty-four hours ago. I didn't sit down. I leaned my uninjured hand flat against the polished wood, staring down every man and woman in the room.

"As of 9:00 AM this morning," Marcus announced, stepping forward and dropping a thick stack of certified court orders onto the center of the table, "Eleanor Vance has filed a multi-million dollar fraud and asset-recovery lawsuit against Hale Global Investments. We have presented undeniable evidence to the state supreme court that Victor Hale used forged documents and embezzled funds from the Vance Estate to secure the very capital this firm uses to operate."

The corporate lawyers looked at the documents, their faces turning an ashen gray.

"This... this is an immediate injunction," one lawyer whispered, his voice trembling. "You’ve frozen the corporate clearing accounts."

"I haven't just frozen them," I said, my voice calm, cold, and utterly commanding. "I own them. Every single dollar Victor stole from my husband’s accounts was tracking directly into your primary investment fund. That means every asset, every property, and every piece of intellectual property owned by Hale Global is legally tied to my estate as stolen property."

Henderson swallowed hard, his forehead slick with sweat. "Mrs. Vance, please. We didn't know about Victor’s personal conduct. We had no idea about the assault or the forgery. We are an innocent party—"

"You sat at this table and watched him drain my husband's legacy for a year, Mr. Henderson," I interrupted, my eyes narrowing. "You accepted the bonuses. You signed off on the 'foundation' transfers without asking a single question because the returns were high. You aren't innocent. You were just comfortable."

I stood up straight, adjusting the splint on my arm.

"This firm is liquidated," I declared. "By the end of the business day, the federal marshals will arrive to seize the servers and the financial records. You have thirty minutes to pack your personal belongings and vacate the building."

"You can't do this!" one of the younger board members shouted, standing up, his face red with anger. "We have hundreds of employees! We have market positions—"

"Then I suggest you start updates on your resumes," I said, turning my back on them. "Marcus, clear the room."

As I walked out of the boardroom, the sounds of shouting, crying, and frantic phone calls echoed behind me. It was the sound of an empire turning to ash. Victor had thought he could use my house, my money, and my grief to build a throne for himself.

But a throne built on a broken mother’s back will always collapse under its own weight.

I walked down the long glass corridor toward Victor’s private office. The room was massive, featuring panoramic views of the city, a custom leather desk, and framed photos of Victor and Elise smiling on red carpets.

I walked over to the desk, picked up the framed photograph of my daughter, and looked at her face. The sweet, innocent girl I raised was completely gone, replaced by the greedy, vicious woman who had dragged me across the marble floor.

I didn't cry. I simply opened the desk drawer, dropped the frame inside, and slammed it shut.

"Eleanor," Marcus said, entering the office quietly. "The D.A. just called. Victor’s legal team is desperate. They are offering a full plea deal. Victor will plead guilty to the financial fraud if they drop the aggravated assault charges. He wants to serve his time in a minimum-security federal facility."

I turned around to look at Marcus, a cold smile touching my lips. "Tell the D.A. no deals. I want them both to go to trial. I want the world to see every single piece of evidence. And I want them to serve every single day of their sentences in maximum security."

"And Elise?" Marcus asked carefully. "She's begging to see you. She says she needs to explain."

"She explained everything on the driveway," I said. "Let's go home."
