Chapter 2 - The Secret Under the Floorboards

Moving into the Don’s personal quarters was like stepping into a beautiful, silent fortress. The rooms were vast, decorated in dark mahogany and expensive leather, smelling of expensive cigars, rain, and cedarwood.
For the next three days, Elena lived in a state of high alert. Luca was rarely there; he was busy managing the bloody turf war against the rival Moretti syndicate. But even in his absence, his presence was stifling. There were cameras in the hallways, guards at every exit, and his silent, watchful eyes seemed to linger in every shadow.
Yet, Lily was thriving. She treated the dark, terrifying mansion like her personal playground. She would wander into Luca’s study, drawing stick figures on his expensive parchment, and strangely, Luca never stopped her. He would simply sit at his desk, signing execution orders and multi-million dollar contracts, while a three-year-old played with wooden blocks at his feet.
But late one night, when the mansion was dead silent, Elena made her move.
Ensuring Lily was fast asleep in her small bed, Elena crept out of the bedroom. She didn't wear her maid’s shoes; she was barefoot, moving like a ghost. She bypassed the security cameras with a practiced ease that no ordinary maid should possess.
She slipped into the library.
Elena approached the massive, floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. She pulled a copy of Dante’s Inferno exactly three inches out, then pressed a hidden release latch near the baseboard. A small floorboard popped open.
Inside the hidden compartment lay a high-frequency burner phone, a forged passport with her photo but a different name—Sofia Moretti—and a small, silver vial of tasteless, odorless poison.
Elena’s breath hitched. She reached for the burner phone and switched it on. Immediately, a text message flashed on the screen:
"The Don is getting soft. Use the child to get closer. Poison his drink by Friday, or we send his sister's killer to finish you and the girl."
Elena’s hands shook. She wasn't just a maid. She was the runaway widow of Mateo Moretti, Luca’s fiercest enemy. Lily wasn't just a random toddler—she was a Moretti heir, a child whose very existence could reignite a war that would burn Bellavita to ash. Elena had fled the cruel Moretti clan to protect her daughter, changing her name and hiding in the lion's den, believing the last place they would look for her was inside the Ferraro estate. But they had found her. And now, they were blackmailing her into becoming an assassin.
"Is that for me?"
A deep, chilling voice echoed from the doorway.
Elena gasped, dropping the phone. It clattered against the hardwood floor.
She spun around, her back slamming against the bookshelf.
Luca Ferraro was leaning against the doorframe. He had discarded his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal muscular forearms covered in dark tattoos and old scars. In his right hand, he held a glass of dark amber whiskey.
He didn't look angry. He looked bored. And that was far more terrifying.
"D-Don Ferraro..." Elena gasped, trying to step in front of the open floorboard to hide the compartment.
Luca walked into the room, his footsteps silent. He stopped just inches from her, the scent of whiskey and cedar wrapping around her like a chokehold. He reached down, effortlessly pushing her aside with one hand, and picked up the burner phone.
He looked at the text message. Then, he looked at the silver vial of poison still sitting in the floorboard.
"You're a very bad liar, Sofia," Luca murmured, using her real name.
Elena fell to her knees, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Please. Please, Luca. I didn't want to do it. They threatened Lily. If I don't kill you, they will kill her! She has nothing to do with this war. She is innocent!"
Luca looked down at her, his face an unreadable mask. He knelt, matching her level, and picked up the vial of poison. He swirled the clear liquid inside.
"I’ve known who you were since the moment you applied for the job," Luca said softly.
Elena’s jaw dropped. "What...?"
"You think my security detail is so incompetent that they wouldn't vet a woman working under my roof?" Luca let out a dark, dry chuckle. "I knew Mateo Moretti was dead. I knew his widow fled with his only child. And I knew you came here, thinking the shadow of my castle would hide you."
"Then why?" Elena whispered, trembling. "Why did you let me stay? Why haven't you killed us?"
Luca reached out, his rough hand gently lifting her chin so she had to look into his eyes.
"Because your daughter has my sister's eyes," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, burning whisper. "And because I wanted to see if you would actually try to kill me."

He pressed the vial of poison into her hand.
"Friday is tomorrow, Sofia. Let’s see what you choose."
