CHAPTER 2 — "The Promise Her Mother Made Her Swear To Keep"

The manager couldn't answer.
His throat tightened.
Around him, shoppers who had been judging her only seconds earlier suddenly looked away in shame.
He knelt beside the girl.
"Sweetheart... where are your parents?"
She hesitated.
Then looked down at the sleeping baby.
"My mommy isn't coming back."
The words landed like a punch.
The manager gently asked again.
"What happened?"
The little girl wiped away her tears with the back of her dirty hand.
"Mom got sick three days ago."
"She told me to take care of Noah."
"She closed her eyes..."
"...and she never woke up again."
The woman standing nearby covered her mouth and began crying.
Another customer quietly pushed away his shopping cart.
No one had expected this.
The manager's heart shattered.
"Have you eaten today?"
The little girl slowly shook her head.
"I gave the last bread to Noah yesterday."
"And today... he only has me."
Without saying another word, the manager filled a shopping cart with baby formula, diapers, blankets, food, fruit, medicine, and warm clothes.
Customers rushed forward.
One paid for everything.
Another handed over cash.
Someone else offered a place to stay.
For the first time in days...
The little girl smiled.
But just as everyone believed the nightmare was finally over...
A police officer entered the store holding an old envelope.
He looked directly at the girl.
"Are you... Emily Carter?"
She nodded nervously.
The officer swallowed hard before speaking.
"We've been looking for you."
"Your mother left this letter..."
May you like
"...and according to what's inside..."
the baby you've been risking your life to protect... isn't your brother at all.
