CHAPTER 8 â âEMILY CHOSE THE WRONG CHILD... AND THE ENTIRE BUILDING EXPLODEDâ

The countdown continued.
23:58:41...
No one spoke.
Every FBI agent stared at the giant screen.
Detective Harris broke the silence.
"This is impossible."
"There can't be eleven more vaults."
Daniel's eyes remained fixed on the monitor.
"Someone wants us to believe we're already losing."
Then another message appeared.
WELCOME TO THE FOUNDATION.
ONE CHILD.
ONE CHOICE.
ONE TRUTH.
The screen flickered.
Suddenly, two live video feeds appeared.
On the left...
A little boy, no older than six, was locked inside a steel room.
He clutched a worn teddy bear, crying for his mother.
On the right...
A teenage girl sat tied to a chair, desperately trying to free herself.
Both rooms had digital timers above the doors.
23:57:59
A mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Only one door can be opened."
"Save one..."
"...the other dies."
Emily's heart pounded.
"No..."
"You can't do this."
The voice ignored her.
"Emily Carter..."
"Your mother believed every child deserved to live."
"Let's see if you believe the same."
The FBI cyber team frantically traced the signal.
Nothing.
It bounced through servers in twelve different countries.
Untraceable.
Daniel slammed his fist onto a desk.
"There has to be another way."
But every engineer reached the same conclusion.
Only one electronic key would activate.
One child.
One rescue.
No second chance.
Emily quietly walked toward the screens.
She stared at the little boy.
Then at the teenage girl.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The boy kept crying.
But the girl...
She wasn't crying anymore.
She was staring directly into the hidden camera.
Almost...
Waiting.
Emily suddenly remembered something her mother once told her.
"When people are truly terrified..."
"They don't stop looking for a way to survive."
Emily whispered,
"The girl..."
"She's trying to tell us something."
Everyone zoomed in.
The girl slowly blinked.
Once...
Twice...
Three times.
Detective Harris frowned.
"She's blinking in a pattern."
An FBI analyst quickly decoded it.
Three words appeared on the screen.
THE BOY IS BAIT.
The room froze.
Daniel looked again.
For the first time...
He noticed the boy's tears.
There weren't any.
The crying sound...
Was coming from hidden speakers.
The child wasn't crying at all.
The Foundation had staged the entire scene.
The little boy was alive...
But he wasn't the real target.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"We save the girl."
Daniel nodded.
"Open Door Two."
The agents activated the second key.
For three terrifying seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then...
The steel door behind the teenage girl unlocked.
She ran outside screaming.
Everyone sighed in relief.
Emily smiled.
"We did it..."
But before anyone could celebrate...
The boy slowly stood up.
He looked directly into the hidden camera.
Then...
He smiled.
A smile no frightened child should ever wear.
He reached into his pocket...
Pressed a small red button...
And quietly whispered,
"Goodbye."
The live feed instantly went black.
Outside...
A deafening explosion shook the entire abandoned orphanage.
The building trembled.
Windows shattered.
Flames erupted from beneath the ground.
Agents were thrown backward by the blast.
Daniel shielded Emily and Noah with his body.
Dust filled the air.
When the smoke finally cleared...
Half the underground facility had collapsed.
Detective Harris looked toward the burning ruins.
His face turned pale.
"The boy..."
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No..."
"He wasn't a prisoner."
"He was one of them."
At that exact moment...
The rescued teenage girl grabbed Daniel's arm with trembling hands.
"I know where the next vault is."
Daniel stared at her.
"How?"
She swallowed hard before answering.
"Because..."
"...I helped build them."
The room fell silent.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed everything:
May you like
"I wasn't kidnapped fifteen years ago..."
"...I was raised by the Foundation to become one of its leaders."
