CHAPTER 6 — “THE OFFICER RAISED HIS GUN... THEN THE LITTLE GIRL SAID FIVE WORDS THAT SAVED EVERYONE”

The hallway erupted into chaos.

"Gun!"

Doctors screamed.

Nurses grabbed patients.

Families threw themselves to the floor.

The former police officer slowly pulled a black pistol from inside his jacket.

His badge hit the floor with a metallic clang.

For years...

He had hidden behind that badge.

Protecting criminals instead of innocent people.

Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Emily and Noah.

"Get behind me!"

But Emily didn't move.

She stared at the man.

Then suddenly...

She recognized him.

Her face turned white.

"It was you..."

The man smiled.

"So you finally remember."

Three years earlier...

On the night Noah disappeared...

He had come to Sarah's apartment.

Not to arrest her.

To kill both children.

Sarah had escaped through the back door, carrying baby Noah in one arm and Emily in the other.

From that night on...

They never stopped running.

The officer slowly pointed the gun at Daniel.

"This family should have disappeared years ago."

"Richard failed."

"So I'll finish it myself."

Emily suddenly stepped forward.

Everyone shouted.

"No!"

But she ignored them.

She looked directly into the man's eyes.

Then quietly said five words that made his finger freeze on the trigger.

"My mommy forgave you already."

The hallway became completely silent.

The officer's expression changed.

For the first time...

His cold face cracked.

Emily reached into her pocket.

She carefully unfolded a tiny piece of paper.

"I found this inside Mommy's Bible."

She handed it to him.

It was Sarah's handwriting.

If Michael ever finds this...

I know you weren't born evil.

You once saved my life before fear changed you.

Please don't destroy what's left of yours.

The man's hands began shaking violently.

His name...

Was Michael.

No one in the room knew that twenty years earlier, Sarah had once pulled him from a burning car after an accident.

She had saved his life.

He had never forgotten.

But greed...

Money...

And fear had slowly turned him into someone he no longer recognized.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

The gun lowered.

Then...

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the hallway.

But it hadn't come from Michael.

Everyone turned in horror.

Richard Lawson had somehow grabbed a hidden backup pistol while officers were distracted.

His bullet struck Michael squarely in the chest.

Michael collapsed to the floor.

With his final breath, he grabbed Detective Harris's arm.

"Don't..."

"...let Richard escape again."

Then he pressed a small electronic key into Daniel's hand.

"The evidence..."

"...isn't finished."

"It leads..."

"...to the one person above Richard."

Daniel frowned.

"There was someone even higher?"

Michael coughed blood.

He looked at Emily one last time.

"I'm sorry..."

"Your mother..."

"...died protecting the truth."

His eyes slowly closed.

As paramedics rushed in, Daniel looked at the electronic key.

Only one word was engraved on it.

FOUNDATION.

No company name.

No address.

No explanation.

Just one word.

And deep beneath it...

May you like

A strange symbol that none of them had ever seen before.

It was the beginning of a conspiracy far bigger than the Whitmore family... and far more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
