Chapter 1 - The Shattered Lid and the Final Breath

The cemetery stood frozen. The rain fell like sheets of glass, blurring the horror etched onto every mourner's face. Arthur Vance stood over the white casket, his hands shaking so violently he could barely grip the polished silver handles. Behind him, the young boy, Leo, was still on his knees in the mud, gasping for air, his eyes locked onto the stepmother, Evelyn.

"Arthur, please!" Evelyn’s voice shrilled, a desperate, pitchy octave above the rumbling thunder. She rushed forward, her expensive black lace dress dragging in the filth. She grabbed his arm, her manicured nails digging into his skin. "He’s a street rat! A lunatic! You’re going to desecrate our daughter’s resting place because of a delusional orphan? Think of Eleanor's dignity!"

Arthur looked at his wife. For five years, he had seen her as the graceful, loving savior who stepped in after his first wife passed. But right now, looking into her eyes, he didn't see grief. He saw the cold, calculated panic of a trapped predator.

"Get off me," Arthur growled, a low, primal sound that didn't even sound like his own voice.

With a burst of adrenaline fueled by pure, unadulterated terror, Arthur shoved Evelyn away and threw his entire weight against the heavy lid of the coffin. The brass latches resisted, clicking loudly against the downpour.

"Help him!" someone screamed from the crowd.

Two gravediggers, dropping their shovels, rushed forward to assist. Together, with a synchronized grunt of agony, they pried the lid open. A collective gasp tore through the crowd of black-clad mourners.

There lay Lily. She looked like a marble statue, her skin a translucent, horrifying shade of blue-white. Her hands were folded neatly across her chest, holding a single white rose. She wasn't breathing. There was no movement.

"See?!" Evelyn screamed, her voice triumphant yet hysterical. "She’s gone! You’ve ruined her funeral! Call the police to drag this orphan away!"

But Arthur didn't look away. He leaned into the casket, pressed his ear against Lily's cold chest, and waited. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. The rain beat heavily against his back. Nothing.

Thump.

Arthur’s eyes flew open. It was so faint, so impossibly weak, but it was there. A heartbeat.

"She’s warm! Her neck is warm!" Arthur roared, reaching in to lift his fourteen-year-old daughter out of the satin lining. As he pulled her up, the white rose fell from her hands, revealing something that made the crowd scream.

The inside of the coffin lid was scratched. Deep, jagged gouges marred the expensive white fabric. Lily’s fingernails were broken, encrusted with dried blood and white satin fibers. She had woken up inside the dark box before losing consciousness again.

"Call an ambulance!" Arthur bellowed, cradling Lily's limp body in his arms.

Evelyn backed away, her face draining of all color. She turned to flee toward the waiting limousine, but Leo, the mud-stained boy, threw his entire body against her legs, tackling her into the wet earth.

"She did it!" Leo yelled, spitting out mud. "I saw her buy the toxin from the docks! She paid my brother to fetch the sleeping syrup! She said she wanted the Vance fortune all to herself!"

"Let go of me, you little monster!" Evelyn shrieked, kicking him wildly.

The funeral was no longer a place of mourning. It was a crime scene. As the distant wails of sirens began to pierce through the thunderstorm, Arthur looked from his suffocating daughter to the woman he had shared a bed with, realizing his entire life had been a beautifully orchestrated lie.
