Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Poisoned Sleep

The intensive care unit of St. Jude’s Hospital smelled of ozone and bleach. The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor was the only thing keeping Arthur from losing his mind. Lily lay connected to a web of tubes and wires, a ventilator breathing for her shallow, poisoned lungs.
The doctor, a stern man named Dr. Harrison, walked into the private room, holding a clipboard with trembling hands. "Mr. Vance. We ran the toxicology report. It’s exactly what the boy said. It’s not a medical coma. It’s a specialized neurotoxin derived from the Tetraodontidae family—pufferfish poison, mixed with a heavy sedative."
Arthur gripped the edge of the metal table. "How does it work?"
"It mimics death perfectly," Dr. Harrison explained, his voice grim. "It drops the heart rate to less than three beats per minute. Body temperature plummets. Pupils dilate and become unreactive to light. Even a standard stethoscope wouldn't pick it up without prolonged observation. If you had buried her... she would have suffocated six feet underground within two hours."
A cold sweat broke out across Arthur's neck. He looked at Lily’s bandaged fingers—the fingers she had used to desperately claw at the inside of her own coffin.
Suddenly, the door burst open. Two police detectives walked in, leading Leo, who had been washed and given a oversized hospital gown.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, "we have a problem. We went to arrest your wife at your estate. She’s gone. She cleaned out the wall safe—over three million dollars in negotiable bonds and jewelry are missing. But that’s not all."
The detective turned to Leo. "Tell him what you told us, kid."
Leo looked at Arthur, his young eyes filled with a haunting maturity. "Mr. Vance, I’m sorry I didn't come sooner. I didn't know she was going to use it on Lily. My older brother, Marcus, works for the smugglers at the harbor. Evelyn... she didn't just buy the poison last week. She’s been buying small doses of a different poison for the past two years."
Arthur froze. "What are you talking about?"
"The medicine she gives you every night for your migraines," Leo whispered, flinching. "Marcus told me she was asking for something that causes gradual heart failure. Something that looks like a natural stroke."
The room spun. Arthur staggered backward, hitting the wall. The migraines. The sudden, unexplainable fatigue he had been feeling for months. The doctor had told him it was stress from his business, but it wasn't stress. Evelyn wasn't just trying to kill Lily to eliminate an heir—she was systematically poisoning him, too. She wanted the entire Vance empire, and she was going to leave a trail of corpses to get it.

Before Arthur could process the horror, the heart monitor beside Lily’s bed suddenly went wild. The steady beep turned into a flatline roar.
"Code Blue! We're losing her!" Dr. Harrison yelled, slamming the emergency button on the wall. Nurses flooded the room, pushing Arthur and the detectives out into the hallway as the chaos began.
