Chapter 4 - The Twisted Truth

Arthur pushed himself up from the wet asphalt, ignoring the searing pain in his shoulder. He stared at the woman he had loved, feeling a profound, sickening disgust.

"Why, Evelyn?" Arthur choked out. "I gave you everything. You had access to millions. You were my wife!"

"Your wife?" Evelyn laughed, a harsh, grating sound that was swallowed by the thunder. "I was your trophy! Your shadow! Everything in that house belonged to Eleanor's memory or Lily’s future! If you died, ninety percent of the Vance trust went directly to Lily, managed by a board of trustees until she turned twenty-five. I would have been left with a pittance! A monthly allowance like a beggar!"

She stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the wet concrete. "But if Lily died first? Her share reverts to you. And when you die of your tragic 'heart condition' a few months later... everything comes to me. No trustees. No restrictions. I would have been the sole owner of Vance Logistics."

"You're a monster," Arthur whispered.

"I’m a businesswoman," Evelyn snapped. She turned to Marcus. "Finish him. We don't have time. The cargo ship leaves in ten minutes, and the police are swarming the main gate."

Marcus hesitated, tightening his grip on the crowbar. "You said we were just scaring the kid, Evelyn. You didn't say anything about killing a billionaire. This is a capital offense!"

"I am paying you a million dollars, you idiot!" Evelyn shrieked, slapping him across the face. "Do it now, or I’ll leave you here to take the fall for the poison!"

That moment of hesitation was all Arthur needed. He lunged forward, tackling Marcus around the waist. The two men crashed into a stack of oil drums, sending them rolling across the pier with a deafening metallic clatter.

Marcus swung wildly, landing a punch on Arthur's jaw. Arthur tasted copper, but the rage inside him was a blinding fire. He grabbed Marcus’s wrist, slamming it against a metal beam until the crowbar clattered to the ground. With a final, desperate heave, Arthur threw the younger man into a flooded ditch, knocking the wind out of him.

Arthur spun around to face Evelyn, but she was already running up the gangplank of a massive, rusted container ship flying a foreign flag.

"Evelyn!" Arthur screamed, giving chase.

She reached the deck of the ship, looking down at him with a look of frantic triumph. "You're too late, Arthur! This ship is registered in an international territory. Once we leave port, your American police have no jurisdiction! Goodbye, my love!"

But as she turned to run toward the captain's quarters, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the ship's bridge. It wasn't a sailor.

It was Detective Miller, flanked by four heavily armed port authority officers, their red laser sights instantly painting chests and foreheads.
