CHAPTER 1 — "The Woman Everyone Thought Was Poor... Until the Entire Store Froze."

The silence inside Lawrence & Co. Fine Jewels was expensive.

Not the ordinary kind of silence.

The kind built from old money, discreet security, and clients who measured fortunes in generations rather than dollars.

Every marble tile reflected the glow of crystal chandeliers.

Every showcase displayed diamonds so rare that none carried visible price tags.

People here didn't ask how much something cost.

If they had to ask, they couldn't afford it.

Victoria Lawrence stepped through the revolving doors without announcing herself.

She had no bodyguards.

No designer logo screamed from her clothing.

Her beige trench coat was perfectly tailored but carried no recognizable brand. Her leather handbag was simple, worn slightly at the corners from years of use.

To anyone who judged wealth by visible labels...

She looked invisible.

Exactly as she preferred.

The receptionist glanced at her for barely a second before returning to a billionaire couple examining emerald necklaces.

Victoria smiled faintly.

Nothing had changed.

She had spent decades building the company culture around one simple principle:

The richest people rarely dressed like they had something to prove.

She slowly walked toward the heritage collection.

Inside one display case rested a breathtaking sapphire necklace.

It had belonged to her grandmother.

The founder of Lawrence & Co.

No customer knew that.

Only three executives still remembered the truth.

Victoria reached out gently, admiring the craftsmanship through the glass.

Before she could speak—

"Well..."

A sharp female voice echoed across the showroom.

"I guess miracles really do happen."

Several customers turned.

High heels clicked across the marble floor.

Chloe Sterling approached like she owned the building.

Her scarlet evening gown shimmered beneath the lights.

Diamonds sparkled from her ears, neck, wrists, and fingers.

Everything about her screamed luxury.

Everything except class.

She stopped directly in front of Victoria, deliberately invading her personal space.

"I almost didn't recognize you," Chloe said loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

"I heard your investment company collapsed years ago."

A few guests exchanged curious glances.

Victoria remained perfectly still.

Chloe continued.

"I honestly thought you'd disappeared after selling your family's estate."

Another lie.

Another performance.

The audience was exactly what Chloe wanted.

Standing beside her was Ethan Calloway.

A young venture capitalist Chloe had recently begun dating.

He looked between the two women with growing curiosity.

"So..." Ethan asked.

"Who's this?"

Chloe laughed.

"Oh, nobody important."

She looked Victoria up and down.

"Just someone who used to pretend she belonged in places like this."

Several customers smiled awkwardly.

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody defended the quiet woman.

Victoria simply studied Chloe's face.

Not with anger.

Not with sadness.

With disappointment.

The same expression a teacher might give a student who had failed the easiest lesson.

"You've become very loud," Victoria finally said.

Chloe smirked.

"And you've become very poor."

The words echoed through the showroom.

Even the pianist in the corner hesitated.

One sales associate quietly lowered her eyes.

Something felt wrong.

Victoria never reacted.

Instead, she calmly asked,

"Is your father here today?"

Chloe laughed harder.

"Why?"

"You planning to beg him for a discount?"

More laughter.

Ethan chuckled politely.

Victoria slowly nodded.

"I see."

Then she turned as though preparing to leave.

Behind the showroom...

The private executive doors suddenly unlocked.

Every employee instinctively straightened.

The branch managing director had appeared.

Arthur Sterling.

Chloe's father.

His face looked unusually tense.

He had been reviewing quarterly reports upstairs when an assistant whispered three impossible words.

"Ms. Lawrence arrived."

Arthur nearly dropped his tablet.

Impossible.

She hadn't visited this flagship location in almost six years.

He hurried downstairs without finishing the meeting.

The moment he entered the showroom...

He saw her.

Standing quietly.

Facing his daughter.

Arthur's heart nearly stopped.

He ignored everyone else.

Ignored clients worth hundreds of millions.

Ignored Chloe completely.

He walked directly toward Victoria.

Every employee watched.

The room became so silent that crystal glasses seemed loud.

Arthur stopped exactly two feet away.

Then—

He bowed.

Forty-five degrees.

Perfectly.

"I sincerely apologize, Ms. Lawrence."

His voice shook.

"I wasn't informed of your arrival."

The entire showroom froze.

A champagne flute slipped from someone's hand and shattered across the marble floor.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because one impossible question now filled every mind.

Why...

...was the managing director bowing to the woman everyone believed was broke?

May you like

And why did Chloe suddenly look like she had just seen a ghost?

To be continued...
