Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

By midnight, the storm that had been threatening all day finally broke over the Hudson Valley. Thunder rattled the heavy leaded-glass windows of the Moretti estate, and rain lashed against the stone facade like a barrage of bullets.
Inside his study, Alessandro sat beneath the dim glow of a single desk lamp. On the couch across the room, Lily was fast asleep, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket he had taken from his own bed. He had refused to put her in the guest room. Something inside him—a primal, protective instinct he didn't fully understand—demanded that she remain within his sight.
On the desk lay three separate files.
One was Elena’s employment record. The second was the financial audit of the Moretti shipping terminals in Brooklyn. The third was a list of every guard who had been on duty during the morning shift.
A soft knock came at the door.
"Enter," Alessandro said.
Carlo stepped into the room, holding a silver tray with a fresh cup of black coffee. His suit was, as always, immaculate, though his eyes carried the faint shadows of exhaustion.
"The child is still sleeping?" Carlo asked quietly, glancing toward the couch.
"She is," Alessandro said. "What did you find on the Delaware LLC?"
Carlo set the coffee down and took a seat across from the desk. "It’s a shell company, as we suspected. But the money used to purchase Judge Harrison's son's debt didn't come from an external rival. It was routed through a Swiss bank account. An account we have used for years to wash our own union payouts."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "Someone is using my own money to buy leverage against me?"
"It appears so," Carlo said, his voice laced with grave concern. "The transactions were authorized using an encrypted digital key. Only three such keys exist. One is yours. One is Marco’s. And one is mine."
The silence in the room became absolute, save for the steady ticking of the silver pocket watch on the desk.
"Are you accusing Marco, Carlo?" Alessandro asked softly.
"I am merely presenting the facts, Alessandro," Carlo replied smoothly. "Marco has been distant lately. His gambling debts in Atlantic City were quietly settled three months ago. I assumed he had managed his finances, but now... I have to wonder where that money came from."
Alessandro leaned back in his chair. Marco had saved his life three times. They had bled together in the gutters of Queens. To think of him as a traitor was like accepting that his own right hand was trying to cut his throat. But in the Mafia, loyalty had an expiration date, and everyone had a price.
"And what about you, Carlo?" Alessandro challenged, his voice cold. "You have access to the keys. You manage the accounts."
Carlo didn't flinch. "I have served your family for fifteen years, Alessandro. Your father died in my arms. If I wanted to destroy the Moretti name, I could have done it a decade ago. I have no family, no heirs, and no desire for power. My loyalty is to the seat you sit in."
Before Alessandro could respond, a sudden, desperate cry broke the quiet of the room.
On the couch, Lily was thrashing under the cashmere blanket. Her small face was contorted in terror, her hands clawing at the air as she whimpered. She was having a nightmare.
Alessandro was out of his chair before he could think. He crossed the room and knelt beside the couch, carefully lifting the small girl into his arms.
"Hey," he murmured, his voice surprisingly gentle, a tone he hadn't used since he was a boy. "Hey, it’s okay. You're safe."
Lily opened her eyes, swimming with tears. She clutched at the lapel of his coat, her tiny chest heaving with deep, ragged sobs. She buried her face in his neck, her small voice trembling as she spoke through her tears.
"The bad man," she sobbed. "The bad man in the basement. He said... he said he was going to put Mommy in the dark water if I didn't play the game."
Alessandro’s body went completely rigid. He looked over his shoulder at Carlo, who stood by the desk, his face a mask of polite concern.
"What game, Lily?" Alessandro asked, keeping his voice soft, hiding the murderous rage building inside him. "What did the man want you to do?"
"He gave me a shiny key," Lily whimpered, rubbing her eyes with her tiny fists. "He said to put it in the big desk in the library. He said if I did, Mommy would get to stay with me forever. But I dropped it in the grass... I was scared."
Alessandro felt a drop of ice-cold sweat run down his spine. The "shiny key" wasn't a key at all. It was a USB drive. A hardware exploit designed to bypass his library computer’s offline firewall.
He gripped Lily a little tighter. "Lily, look at me. Who is the bad man? Have you seen him in this house?"
The little girl nodded, her tear-stained face looking directly past Alessandro, her tiny finger rising to point across the room.

But she wasn't pointing at Carlo.
She was pointing at the doorway, where Marco Bianchi stood in the shadows, his hand resting silently on his gun.
