Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Alessandro took off his night-vision goggles, letting them hang around his neck. He didn't need them anymore. The red emergency light of the bunker illuminated the scene with a bloody, horrific clarity.

"Carlo," Alessandro said, his voice flat. "Put the gun down."

Carlo didn't look like the refined, polite butler anymore. His silver hair was disheveled, and his expensive suit jacket was gone, revealing a shoulder holster beneath his suspenders. He kept the revolver pointed directly at Lily’s head.

"I’m afraid I can't do that, Alessandro," Carlo said, his voice calm, chillingly polite. "This is where the story ends for the Moretti family."

Alessandro kept his weapon trained on Carlo's chest. "It was you. Not Marco. You were the one running the Delaware LLC. You were the one buying Harrison’s debts. You set Marco up."

"Oh, Marco was easy," Carlo chuckled, a soft, dry sound. "He was greedy, bitter, and stupid. He wanted to believe he was a kingmaker. I simply fed his ego, gave him a few scraps, and let him think he was leading a revolution. He was the perfect shield. If anything went wrong, you would blame him. And indeed, you did."

"Why, Carlo?" Alessandro demanded, his grip tightening on his gun. "My father treated you like a brother. I trusted you with my life. With my empire."

Carlo’s face suddenly contorted, his polite facade cracking to reveal a deep-seated, burning hatred.

"Your father was a butcher!" Carlo spat, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "He didn't treat me like a brother. He treated me like a dog! He threw me scraps while he sat on a throne of blood. And you? You are no better. You inherited everything I helped build, and you treat me like a servant who brings you your morning coffee!"

Elena whimpered behind the tape, her eyes pleading with Alessandro. Lily looked up at her mother, then at Alessandro, her tiny voice trembling.

"Mr. Warm..." she whispered, using the name she had given him in the garden. "Please make the bad man stop."

Carlo laughed, a manic, desperate sound. "The child is very perceptive. She was supposed to be my insurance policy. I knew Elena was desperate enough to do anything to save her daughter. I unlocked the library doors and told her to have the child place the USB drive in your computer. A child wouldn't trigger suspicion. If she succeeded, I would have had full access to your offshore accounts. If she failed... well, I had Marco to take the fall."

"And now?" Alessandro asked, his eyes darting to the corner of the room, calculating the distance between himself, Carlo, and the children.

"Now, the estate is surrounded by my men," Carlo said, his eyes wild. "Marco is dead—my men took care of him in the hallway. You are alone, Alessandro. The police will arrive in an hour to find a tragic scene: a home invasion gone wrong. The great Alessandro Moretti, killed alongside his staff and a poor, innocent maid and her child. And I? I will be the sole survivor, the loyal manager who inherits the keys to the kingdom."

"You made one mistake, Carlo," Alessandro said softly.

Carlo’s eyes narrowed. "And what is that?"

"You forgot who I am."

Alessandro fired.

But he didn't shoot at Carlo.

He shot the emergency red light bulb directly above Carlo’s head.

The room plunged into pitch-black darkness.

BANG. BANG.

Two gunshots rang out in the dark.

A woman's scream. A child's cry.

Alessandro sprinted forward, guided by his memory of where Lily was sitting. He threw his body over her, shielding her small frame with his own.

He felt a searing, white-hot pain rip through his shoulder as a bullet found his flesh. He didn't flinch. He raised his weapon, switched his mind to absolute, ruthless survival mode, and fired three times in the direction of the muzzle flashes.

A heavy groan.

The sound of a body collapsing against the concrete floor.

The sound of wet, gasping breaths.

Silence returned to the bunker, broken only by the heavy panting of Alessandro and the terrified whimpering of Elena.

Alessandro reached up, pulled his night-vision goggles over his eyes, and switched them on.

Carlo lay on the floor, clutching his chest, blood pooling rapidly beneath his white shirt. His eyes were wide, staring blankly at the ceiling. The silver-plated revolver had slipped from his hand.

Alessandro stood up, his shoulder burning with pain. He walked over to Elena and quickly sliced the ropes holding her hands with his pocket knife. She immediately tore the tape from her mouth and scrambled to the floor, grabbing Lily and holding her in a fierce, desperate embrace.

"Mommy! Mommy!" Lily sobbed, burying her face in her mother's neck.

Alessandro looked down at his bleeding shoulder, then at the dying man on the floor.

Carlo looked up at Alessandro, his voice a wet whisper. "You... you can't... stop them. The city... is already... gone..."

"The city is mine," Alessandro said coldly. "And it always will be."

With a final, ragged breath, Carlo Ricci’s eyes went still.

Alessandro turned his back on the corpse. He walked over to Elena and Lily, his towering, blood-stained figure casting a long shadow under the restored auxiliary lights that flickered back to life.

Elena looked up at him, her body shaking, waiting for the final blow. She knew too much. Her daughter knew too much. In the Mafia, there were no loose ends.

Alessandro looked down at the little girl. Lily peaked out from behind her mother’s shoulder, her wide hazel eyes looking at him.

Despite the blood, despite the gun in his hand, despite the dead man on the floor, she reached out her tiny hand toward him.

"You saved us," she whispered.

Alessandro looked at his scarred, bloodied hands. For twenty years, they had brought nothing but pain, death, and destruction.

He slowly reached out, his massive index finger wrapping around her tiny, warm hand.

He looked at Elena.

"The estate is no longer safe," Alessandro said, his voice firm, but devoid of the coldness that had defined his entire life. "My men will escort you and your daughter to a private estate in Switzerland. You will have a new name. A new life. You will never want for money, and you will never have to look over your shoulder again."

Elena stared at him, tears of disbelief and gratitude streaming down her face. "Why? Why are you doing this for us?"

Alessandro looked at Lily, who was smiling at him through her tears, her tiny fingers holding onto his hand as if he were her guardian angel.

"Because," Alessandro said softly, "for twenty years, I thought the only way to survive was to trust no one. But she reminded me... of what is worth protecting."

He turned and walked out of the bunker, his gun in hand, ready to face the mercenaries waiting in the storm outside. He was Alessandro Moretti, the Boss of New York.

And for the first time in his life, he had something real to fight for.
