Chapter 4 - The Broken Shield

"Marco," Alessandro said, his voice quiet, deadly, and entirely devoid of emotion.
Marco didn't move. He stood in the frame of the doorway, the hallway light casting a long, dark shadow across the study floor. His expression was blank, but his eyes were wide, tracking the small child who had just pointed her finger at his chest.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice raspy. "She's a kid. She's confused. She doesn't know what she's saying."
"She knows exactly what she's saying," Alessandro said. He stood up slowly, keeping Lily cradled in his left arm, his right hand resting casually inside his coat pocket. "You told her mother to apply for the job. You unlocked the west wing library doors. You gave a three-year-old child a key to upload a virus into my private network. Why, Marco?"
Marco took a slow step into the room. "Alessandro, think about this. We’ve been brothers for fifteen years. I took a bullet for you in Brooklyn. You think I’d throw all that away for some Delaware LLC?"
"I think everyone has a breaking point," Alessandro said. "And I think Carlo was right. Your debts in Atlantic City weren't settled by luck. They were settled by the Sabatinis."
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room. The only sound was the lashing of the rain against the glass.
Suddenly, Marco’s face twisted. The mask of the loyal soldier slipped, revealing a desperate, bitter man.
"The Sabatinis?" Marco spat, a cold laugh escaping his lips. "You think this is about the Sabatinis? They’re ghosts, Alessandro! You killed them all! No, this isn't about them. This is about survival."
"Explain," Alessandro commanded.
"You're slipping," Marco snarled, stepping closer, his hand hovering over his holster. "You spend all your time locked in this fortress, counting your old money, while the city is changing. The Russians, the Albanians—they’re taking over the docks. They’re taking the unions. And what do you do? You negotiate. You play judge. You’re soft, Alessandro. You’ve been soft ever since your father died."
"I built this empire," Alessandro said, his voice rising, a low, dangerous rumble.
"Your father built it!" Marco shouted. "You just inherited the throne and locked yourself in the castle! The men are tired of waiting for a war that you’re too afraid to fight. We need a leader who isn't afraid to spill blood to keep what's ours."
"So you sold me out," Alessandro said. "Who is the buyer, Marco?"
Marco smiled, a cold, mocking grin. "You think I'm the only one? Look around you, Boss. Half your guards are on my payroll now. The cameras? They’re on a ten-second loop. The gates? They’re already unlocked. The storm out there? It’s not just rain. It’s a funeral."
Before Alessandro could react, Marco drew his gun.
But Alessandro was faster.
Even with a child in his arm, his instincts, honed by a lifetime of violence, did not fail him. He pulled his semi-automatic from his coat and fired.
BANG.
The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed room. Lily screamed, burying her face into Alessandro's chest.
The bullet struck Marco squarely in the shoulder, spinning him around and knocking his weapon from his hand. He fell back against the doorframe, gasping in pain, his hand clutching his bleeding shoulder.
"Carlo!" Alessandro yelled. "Get the child out of here! Take her to the basement bunker! Now!"
Carlo rushed forward, his face pale with shock. He grabbed a screaming Lily from Alessandro's arms.
"What about you, Alessandro?" Carlo asked, his voice trembling.
"I’m going to clean my house," Alessandro said, his eyes locked on Marco, who was struggling to stand. "Go!"
Carlo turned and fled down the hallway, cradling the crying toddler in his arms.
Alessandro walked over to Marco, his gun pointed directly at his former friend's forehead. He kicked Marco’s fallen pistol across the floor, away from his reach.
"You were my brother, Marco," Alessandro said, his voice hollow. "I would have given you the city if you had asked. But you brought a child into this. You threatened an innocent woman in my house."
Marco looked up, blood seeping through his fingers. He let out a wet, painful laugh. "You still don't get it, do you, Alessandro? I’m not the mastermind. I’m just the distraction."
