CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO STOLE HER LIFE

Sophia stood frozen in Richard Ashcroft’s private study, one hand pressed against the red mark on her cheek.

Victoria still held the old photograph tightly in her fingers.

Her face was full of anger.

But her eyes...

Her eyes were full of fear.

Richard slowly stepped toward Sophia.

His voice trembled.

"Where did you get that bracelet?"

Sophia swallowed hard.

"I've had it since I was a baby."

Richard's face changed.

Pain.

Hope.

Disbelief.

All at once.

Victoria quickly laughed.

"Oh, please. Richard, can't you see what she's doing? She read about your missing daughter online. She found some cheap bracelet and came here to manipulate you."

Sophia looked at her quietly.

"This bracelet isn't fake."

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Richard reached for Sophia's wrist, but his hand shook so badly he could barely touch the gold chain.

Inside the bracelet, almost hidden by age, were three tiny engraved letters.

S.A.R.

Sophia Anne Ashcroft.

Richard stepped back as if someone had struck him.

"My daughter had that name engraved because her mother insisted on it," he whispered.

Victoria's face turned white.

Then she suddenly snapped.

"Enough!"

She pointed toward the door.

"Fire her. Now. Before this girl destroys this family."

But Richard didn't move.

For the first time in years, he looked at his wife like she was a stranger.

"Why are you so afraid of a DNA test?"

The room went silent.

Sophia felt the air leave her lungs.

A DNA test.

The one thing that could prove everything.

Victoria's mouth opened, but no words came out.

That night, Sophia was ordered to leave the servants' quarters.

Her small suitcase was thrown outside in the rain.

The staff watched silently as Victoria stood at the doorway.

"You should have stayed poor," Victoria said coldly. "Poor girls who chase rich families always end badly."

Sophia picked up her suitcase.

Her clothes were soaked.

Her hair stuck to her face.

But she didn't cry.

Before she walked away, she looked straight into Victoria's eyes.

"I didn't come here to steal anything."

She paused.

"I came here to find what was stolen from me."

For one second...

Victoria looked terrified.

Then the gates closed.

Sophia had nowhere to go.

But Richard Ashcroft was not the same man anymore.

That same night, while the mansion slept, he entered the old nursery.

The room had been locked for twenty-three years.

Inside, everything was frozen in time.

A pink blanket.

A wooden rocking horse.

Tiny shoes.

And on the wall...

A portrait of his missing daughter.

Richard stared at the portrait for a long time.

Then he remembered something.

The birthmark.

His daughter had been born with a crescent-shaped birthmark behind her right shoulder.

The next morning, Richard sent his private driver to find Sophia.

But she was gone.

Victoria had made sure of it.

She had paid a man to take Sophia far away from the city.

But Sophia escaped before the car reached the highway.

She ran through the rain, barefoot, frightened, holding only her bracelet and the burned photograph.

Meanwhile, Richard began digging into the past.

He called the detective who had handled his daughter's disappearance.

The old detective was retired now.

But when Richard mentioned Sophia's bracelet, the man went silent.

Then he said something that made Richard's blood run cold.

"Mr. Ashcroft... there was one detail we were ordered to bury."

Richard gripped the phone.

"What detail?"

The detective sighed.

"The night your daughter disappeared, one of the security cameras caught a woman carrying the child out through the east garden."

Richard could barely speak.

"Who was the woman?"

The detective hesitated.

Then answered.

"Victoria."

Richard dropped the phone.

For twenty-three years, he had mourned beside the woman who had taken his child.

For twenty-three years, Victoria had comforted him...

While hiding the truth.

But why?

The answer came from an old file.

Before Sophia disappeared, Richard's first wife, Amelia, had left her entire fortune and company shares to her daughter.

Not to Richard.

Not to Victoria.

To Sophia.

If Sophia was declared dead, those shares would eventually move into the family trust.

A trust Victoria controlled.

Richard's hands shook as he read the documents.

This was never an accident.

It was greed.

It was betrayal.

It was a crime hidden behind silk dresses and charity smiles.

That evening, Victoria hosted a luxury dinner at the mansion.

Politicians, investors, and wealthy guests filled the ballroom.

She smiled like nothing was wrong.

Until the main doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Sophia walked in wearing the same gray maid uniform.

But this time...

She was not alone.

Richard stood beside her.

And behind them were two lawyers, the retired detective, and a doctor carrying a sealed DNA report.

Victoria's glass slipped from her hand.

It shattered on the marble floor.

Richard looked at her in front of everyone.

His voice was calm.

Deadly calm.

"Tonight, my wife wanted to celebrate power."

He looked at Sophia.

"But tonight, we are going to reveal the truth."

Victoria stepped backward.

"No..."

Richard lifted the DNA report.

Then he said the words that destroyed twenty-three years of lies.

"Sophia Bennett is not a maid."

His voice broke.

"She is my daughter."

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

Victoria screamed.

"She's lying!"

But the detective stepped forward.

"No, Mrs. Ashcroft."

He opened the old file.

"You are."

And for the first time in her life...

Sophia watched the woman who stole everything from her...

May you like

Begin to fall.
