Chapter 2 - The $300,000 Paper Trail

The encrypted folder contained detailed logs from smart sensors, hidden safety cameras, and bank monitoring alerts I had installed a year ago after noticing small inconsistencies in my monthly account balances.
For twelve months, I had been transferring $3,000 every single month directly to Teresa's bank account under the assumption that she was paying our property taxes, buying groceries, and covering household utilities while assisting Amy. But the digital records showed a far more sinister reality.
Not a single utility bill had been paid from that money.
Instead, Teresa had been placing our home's utility accounts into default, letting late notices pile up in a private post office box she had rented down the street. The $3,000 monthly transfers were being routed directly into an offshore betting account and a shell company managed by Cousin Mason.
Even worse, the security footage from the hidden camera inside my study captured the exact moment three days ago when Mason and Teresa used an angle grinder to cut open my safe.
On the video, clear as day, Teresa could be seen laughing as she pulled out the property deed.
"Once we get Connor to stay at the Chattanooga site for another week, the default judgment on the house will go through," Mason's voice recorded crystal clear on the audio file. "With his forged signature on the quitclaim deed, the property transfers to our LLC before he even realizes his credit is ruined."
"And what about the girl and the baby?" Teresa had asked on the recording, tossing my wife's personal jewelry into a duffel bag.
"She's weak," Mason replied with a smirk. "We'll tell Connor she neglected the child and ran off. By the time he figures it out, the house will be sold to the investment group for $650,000 cash."
I stood in the middle of my ruined study, my fists clenched so tightly my knuckles turned white. The officer standing next to me stared at my phone screen in utter shock.
"Mr. Bradley," the officer said, his tone turning crisp and formal. "Is this video real-time timestamped and cryptographically verified?"
"Yes," I said, my voice cold and calm. "It's stored on a secure cloud server with automatic timestamp authentication. Every minute of their break-in, theft, and conspiracy is logged."
"This isn't just a domestic dispute or simple trespass anymore," the officer stated, reaching for his radio. "This is premeditated grand larceny, identity theft, child endangerment, and wire fraud."
Outside, the atmosphere changed instantly. The police officers ordered all remaining family members to step away from their vehicles. What had started as a noisy family gathering had now turned into a major crime scene investigation.
Teresa saw me walk out of the front door holding my phone, flanked by two senior detectives who had just arrived on the scene.
"Connor!" she screamed, changing her tone from anger to fake weeping. "Tell these men to let me go! I'm your mother! I did everything for this family! That girl you married is poisoning your mind against your own blood!"
I walked up to her, stopping just two feet away. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't shout.
"You didn't just take my money, Teresa," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "You starved my wife, neglected my feverish son, stole my home's deed, and tried to sell this house out from under us."

"It's my house!" she yelled, her face contorting with rage. "You owe me!"
"The grand jury is going to disagree," I said.
