Chapter 5 - The Betrayal at the Courtroom

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing took place at the Davidson County Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed. On one side sat my mother, dressed in a muted gray jumpsuit, accompanied by her court-appointed defense attorney after her private legal counsel withdrew due to unpaid fees. Next to her sat Mason, looking disheveled and terrified.

On our side sat Amy, looking healthier and stronger after weeks of rest and medical care, accompanied by Marcus and myself.

The prosecutor opened the proceedings by laying out the physical evidence: the encrypted video recordings, the forged power-of-attorney documents, the intercepted text messages, and the medical reports detailing Frederick's severe illness and Amy's exhaustion.

When the prosecutor played the hidden audio recording in open court—where Teresa cold-heartedly said that Amy was "only good for giving birth and washing dishes"—gasps echoed across the courtroom gallery.

Teresa’s defense attorney stood up, attempting to downplay the severity of the charges.

"Your Honor," the defense argued, "this is fundamentally a family misunderstanding that escalated out of control. Mrs. Bradley is an elderly mother who dedicated her life to raising the plaintiff. She believed she had implied consent to manage the family's domestic affairs."

The judge, Honorable Judge Katherine Sterling, raised her hand to interrupt the defense attorney. Her expression was like ice.

"Implied consent?" Judge Sterling barked. "Counselor, did she also have 'implied consent' to break into a locked safe with an angle grinder? Did she have 'implied consent' to forge land deeds and attempt to leave a sick infant without medical care while holding a lavish party with stolen funds?"

"Your Honor—"

"Silence," Judge Sterling commanded. She turned her attention directly to Teresa and Mason. "The evidence presented today demonstrates a level of calculated cruelty and financial exploitation that this court rarely witnesses in domestic cases. The bail for both defendants is hereby revoked. They will remain in custody pending trial."

Teresa suddenly burst into tears, dropping to her knees in front of the defense table.

"Connor! Save me!" she wailed, reaching her handcuffed hands toward me across the bar. "Don't let them do this to your mother! I did it for you! I wanted to build an empire for our family!"

I stood up slowly, holding Amy's hand tightly in mine. I looked down at the woman who had brought me into the world, feeling no anger, no hatred—only a profound, empty pity.

"You didn't do it for the family, Teresa," I said clearly so the entire courtroom could hear. "You did it for yourself. And now you're going to pay for every single thing you took from us."
