Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

Six months after that fateful Friday afternoon, the criminal trial concluded at the Davidson County Courthouse.
The courtroom was filled to capacity with reporters, community members, and distant relatives who had turned against Teresa once the full extent of her greed and corruption was exposed.
Richard Vance, Cousin Mason, and Harold Vance had all taken plea deals, agreeing to testify against Teresa in exchange for reduced sentences. Sitting at the defense table alone, Teresa had no remaining allies, no hidden money, and no escape route.
When the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation, the court clerk read the verdict:
"On Count 1: Grand Larceny — GUILTY."
"On Count 2: Identity Theft and Wire Fraud — GUILTY."
"On Count 3: Attempted Real Estate Fraud — GUILTY."
"On Count 4: Felony Child Endangerment — GUILTY."
"On Count 5: Criminal Conspiracy — GUILTY."
The judge ordered Teresa to stand for sentencing.
"Teresa Bradley," Judge Sterling stated, her voice echoing in the silent room. "You took advantage of your son's generosity, terrorized your daughter-in-law, put your grandchild's life at risk, and conspired with corporate predators to steal the very roof over your family's head. Your actions demonstrate a complete absence of human empathy."
Judge Sterling slammed her gavel down with thunderous force.

"I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole for fifteen years. Furthermore, all assets currently in your name are forfeited to pay full restitution to Connor and Amy Bradley."
Teresa sank into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably as bailiffs led her away in chains. As she was escorted through the side door, she looked back at me one last time, her eyes filled with desperate plea. I simply turned my head away, focusing entirely on Amy, who was holding my hand with tears of relief flowing down her cheeks.
