Chapter 1 - The Golden Handcuffs BreakThe silence inside the private dining room was suffocating. The clatter of crystal glasses froze in mid-air.

Lead Investigator Marcus Vance stepped past the shocked waiters, his gold badge gleaming under the warm chandeliers. Two uniformed officers flanked him, their boots heavy against the plush carpet. Behind them, the six high-net-worth investors—men and women who controlled tens of millions of dollars—stared in total disbelief.

"Brenda Montgomery? Connor Montgomery?" Vance’s voice was calm, clipped, and lethal. "State Financial Crimes Division. You are both under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and criminal forgery."

Connor dropped his fork. The heavy silver rattled against his plate, sending a streak of red wine reduction across the pristine white linen. "What is the meaning of this? Do you have any idea who I am? I’m the CEO of Apex Enterprises! We are hosting an executive dinner!"

"You were hosting a dinner," I said, setting my napkin on the table. Ranch dressing still stung my left eye, but I didn't blink. "Now you're hosting an arraignment."

Brenda’s mask finally cracked. The aristocratic sneer she had worn for five years vanished, replaced by a raw, feral panic. She lunged forward, pointing a manicured finger at me. "She did this! Officers, my daughter-in-law is mentally unstable! She’s off her medication! She’s been fabricating stories for months because my son is divorcing her!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Mrs. Montgomery," Officer Vance replied, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Don't you dare touch me!" Brenda shrieked, backing away into the glass wall. "Connor, do something! Tell them!"

Connor stood up so fast his chair almost flipped backward—the exact same way my chair had been kicked moments earlier. "Jessica, stop this right now! What lies did you tell them? Whatever you think I did, we can talk about it at home!"

"We don't have a home, Connor," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "You put a lien on my father’s house three weeks ago using a forged power of attorney. You signed my name on line forty-two of the Apex loan guarantee."

The lead investor, a stern man named Arthur Sterling, slowly stood up from the head of the table. His eyes darted from Connor’s sweat-stained collar to the state investigators. "Connor... what is she talking about? Is Apex defaulted?"

"No! Mr. Sterling, please! She’s lying!" Connor’s voice cracked into a desperate high pitch.

"We have the bank transfers, Mr. Sterling," Investigator Vance interjected, snapping the steel cuffs onto Connor’s wrists. The metallic click echoed off the glass walls like a gunshot. "Over four million dollars was funneled from your investment syndicate into an offshore entity named BM Holdings—registered directly to Brenda Montgomery."

Sterling’s face turned gray. He looked at the other five investors, who were already pulling out their phones to call their corporate legal teams. "You used our capital as collateral for a ghost company?" Sterling snarled. "You sniveling fraud!"

Brenda tried to bolt toward the kitchen doors, but the female officer caught her by the elbow, twisting her arms behind her back.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Brenda screamed, her pristine hair falling into her face. "I am Brenda Montgomery! You can't do this to me!"

"You're going to jail, Brenda," I whispered as she was marched past me. "And 'sitting like a lady' won't help you there."
