Chapter 5 - The Mastermind UnmaskedThe betrayal ran deeper than I could have ever imagined.

That afternoon, I met with Arthur Sterling at his high-rise office in the financial district. The elderly tycoon looked broken. The news of Apex's fraud had wiped out fifteen percent of his fund's value overnight, but the news about his son was going to destroy his family forever.

I laid the financial logs on his mahogany desk.

"Your son Richard was passing insider trade info to Brenda," I explained. "Brenda used that info to short Apex stock right before they planned to announce bankruptcy. Richard was going to take a three-million-dollar cut of the payout."

Arthur buried his face in his hands. "I treated Connor like a son," he rasped. "I gave him his start. And all the while, he and my own flesh and blood were skinning me alive."

"Connor didn't know about Richard's full involvement," I clarified. "Brenda played everyone. She played Connor, she played Richard, she played you, and she played me. She was running three different scams simultaneously."

Arthur looked up, his eyes sharp despite his grief. "What do you want, Jessica? You brought me this proof before the DA released it. Why?"

"Because Apex owns the master patents for the logistics software my father originally designed," I said, leaning over the desk. "Brenda and Connor stole those patents from my father's estate five years ago when I was grieving. I want the patents back. In exchange, I give you the documentation you need to insulate your fund from the criminal liability and reclaim your stolen capital."

Arthur didn't hesitate for a single second. "Done. I'll have my corporate council transfer the rights to you by five o'clock."
