Chapter 3 - Cornered RatsThe holding area in the basement of the courthouse smelled of stale coffee and industrial bleach.

At 7:00 AM, an hour before the bail hearing, Connorâs attorney requested a emergency five-minute meeting with me in the visitor booth. I walked in, flanked by my legal representative.
Connor sat on the other side of the plexiglass. His tuxedo shirt was wrinkled and stained with sweat, his eyes bloodshot, his stubble dark and patchy. The confident, arrogant golden boy of the tech-investment scene was completely gone.
"Jessica," he sobbed, pressing his hands against the glass. "Please. You have to tell them it was a misunderstanding. You have to pull the complaint!"
"I didn't file a complaint, Connor," I said calmly, taking my seat. "The State Attorney General filed charges. The state doesn't need me anymoreâthey have the bank records."
"It was Mom!" Connor yelled, his voice echoing in the small room. "She made me do it! She told me you wouldn't care about the house! She said you were freelancing and not contributing enough to our future! She engineered the whole thing with Apex!"
Through the glass, I saw the true face of the coward I had married.
"Five years, Connor," I said. "Five years I washed your clothes, cooked your meals, and listened to your mother mock my background, my clothes, and my deceased father. And when she kicked my chair out from under me last night, you didn't check if I was hurt. You laughed."
"I was nervous!" he stammered, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I was terrified of what you were about to do! Jessica, I love you! We can fix this! I'll go to therapy! I'll cut my mother off forever! Just drop the testimony!"
"Your mother is in the cell next to yours, Connor," I replied, standing up. "You might want to save that speech for her. Because according to the prosecutor, sheâs currently in the other room telling the investigators that you forced her to sign the shell company documents."

Connorâs face turned white as chalk. "She... she said what?"
"She sacrificed you, Connor. Just like you sacrificed me." I turned my back on him and walked out the door.
