Chapter 1 - The Blood Crest of House Valerius

The silence in the Grand Banquet Hall was no longer just quiet—it was suffocating.
Every eye in the room darted between Princess Elena’s pale face and the tiny, broken hairpin held in the orphan boy's trembling hand. Underneath the frayed blue thread, a sharp glint of gold caught the chandeliers' light. It was the crest of House Valerius—a double-headed dragon wrapped around a weeping sword.
A seal that had been banished from the kingdom fifteen years ago.
"Guards!" Queen Margaret’s voice tore through the hall like a whip. Her royal robes rustled as she stepped down from her elevated throne, her eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of fury and absolute dread. "Seize that child! He is carrying dangerous sedition! Captain Rowen, execute him outside immediately!"
"No!"
Elena’s voice shattered the royal decorum. She stood up so fast her gem-encrusted gown caught on the gilded armrest. She didn't care. She lunged forward, ignoring the gasps of three hundred noble guests, and blocked Captain Rowen before his broadsword could clear its scabbard.
"Elena, back away!" the Queen hissed, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You do not know what you are touching."
"Look at the crest, Mother!" Elena’s voice shook, her fingers trembling as she pointed at the silver pin. "That isn't a fake. That is my hairpin. The one I lost the night of the Solstice Fire!"
The boy looked up at her, tears finally spilling over his dirt-streaked cheeks. "You... you do remember?" he whispered, his small chest heaving. "Mom said... she said you had to leave me in the forest because the bad men were coming with fire. She said you hid me in the hollow oak..."
The hall erupted into chaotic whispers.
The Solstice Fire.
Fifteen years ago, the Royal Nursery had burned to the ground. The Kingdom had mourned the loss of Princess Elena’s twin brother, Prince Julian. His body was never found, presumed reduced to ashes in the inferno. The tragedy had reshaped the monarchy, allowing Queen Margaret to solidify absolute power and pass a decree that made Elena the sole heir to the throne.
"Lies!" Queen Margaret stepped between Elena and the boy, her eyes cold as ice. "This is a cheap political ploy designed by the Northern rebels to destabilize the crown on the eve of Elena’s coronation! Captain Rowen, remove this street rat!"
Rowen reached down, grabbing the boy's small shoulder with an iron grip. The child cried out in pain, but his eyes never left Elena’s. He reached into his pocket once more, his fingers frantically searching.
"Wait!" the boy gasped, struggling against the heavy armor of the captain. "She gave me something else! She said... she said if you didn't believe the hairpin, to show you the mark!"
With a sudden, desperate tug, the boy ripped open the collar of his faded cloth tunic.
The entire front row of dukes and duchesses gasped in unison.
Engraved right above the child's heart was a dark, raised birthmark in the exact shape of a crowned falcon—the sacred mark born only on the firstborn males of the royal bloodline.
Elena felt the room spin. "Julian..." she whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "You're... you're my brother's son?"

"He is a demon sent to destroy us!" Queen Margaret shrieked, drawing a concealed silver dagger from her sleeve and lunging directly at the child.
