Chapter 6 - The Brother's BetrayalThere was a long pause on the radio line.

"Daniel," my father’s voice returned, devoid of any fatherly warmth, sounding like a calculating machine. "You were always my finest creation. A pity you survived Iraq only to die in a small-town clinic."
"I know everything, Arthur," I said, stepping over the bodies on the floor and grabbing the medical files from the desk. "I know about Switzerland. I know what you did to Emily. And I know why you sent these men."
"Then you understand that you cannot win," Arthur replied smoothly. "Your mother and brother were merely caretakers. Useful idiots. If you drop this, I will ensure you live a very comfortable life overseas. Leave the child at the estate and walk away."
"I'll see you in hell," I said, and smashed the radio beneath my boot.
I ran out of the clinic, jumping into my SUV, and sped back toward my family estate.
When I pulled up the long gravel driveway, I saw emergency flashing lights bouncing off the oak trees.
Three state police cruisers and an ambulance were parked outside. Marcus was standing on the porch, his hand resting on his sidearm, talking to a police officer.
I shoved my way past the officers and walked into the living room.
Margaret was handcuffed to a chair, sobbing uncontrollably. Caleb was sitting on the floor, his wrists bound in plastic flex-cuffs, staring at the floor with hollow, dead eyes.
Marcus walked up to me, his expression grave.
"Cap," Marcus said softly. "The state police arrived ten minutes ago. Someone called in a homicide tip from an anonymous burner phone."
"It was Arthur," I said, looking at my bound family. "He’s trying to burn everything down to clear his trail."
I walked over to Caleb and grabbed him by his shirt collar, dragging him to his feet.
"Where is Arthur hiding?" I demanded. "Where is his command site?"
"I don't know!" Caleb cried out, shaking in terror. "I swear to God, Daniel, I don't know! He never told us where he was staying! He only met us at the old boathouse on Lake Willow!"
"When was the last time you saw him?"
"Yesterday!" Caleb stammered. "He came to inspect Emily before... before Mother gave her the drug! He said he was leaving the country tonight on a private jet from the county airfield at 4:00 AM!"
I checked my watch.

3:15 AM.
I had forty-five minutes before the man who destroyed my life vanished forever into the international sky.
