Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedThe private hanger at the regional county airfield was surrounded by high chain-link fences topped with razor wire. A sleek, black Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines whining as they spooled up for takeoff.

Rain poured in sheets, blurring my windshield as I parked my SUV behind a row of fuel trucks two hundred yards away.

I strapped on my tactical vest, loaded three fresh magazines into my pistol, and slung a suppressed assault rifle across my chest.

This wasn't a law enforcement operation anymore. This was personal. This was justice for Emily.

I cut through the wire fence, slipping through the shadows toward the open hangar door.

Inside, two armed guards stood at the foot of the jet’s boarding stairs. Standing at the top of the stairs, wearing a dark trench coat and holding a leather briefcase, was Arthur.

He looked older, his hair completely white, but his posture was as rigid and military as the day I watched his empty casket lowered into the ground years ago.

"Everything is loaded, sir," one of the guards said, checking his watch. "We need to wheels-up before the state police broadcast the APB."

"Good," Arthur said, his voice carrying over the jet engines. "Leave the mother and Caleb to take the fall. They served their purpose."

"They won't be taking the fall alone, Arthur," I shouted, stepping out from behind a stack of cargo crates into the bright hangar lights.

The two guards instantly raised their rifles, but I was faster.

SQUEAK. SQUEAK.

Two suppressed rounds took down both guards before they could pull their triggers. They crumpled onto the concrete floor.

Arthur didn't panic. He slowly turned around, his dark eyes fixing on me with a terrifyingly calm smile.

"Impressive," Arthur said, stepping down the stairs one by one until he stood on the blood-stained hangar floor. "You always were the best strategist in your unit, Daniel. But you're too emotional. That was always your flaw."

"You raped my wife," I said, my voice trembling with an unimaginable, volcanic rage, my rifle aimed directly at his chest. "You murdered her. You destroyed our family."

"Family?" Arthur laughed—a dry, soulless sound. "Family is a construct for weak men, Daniel. I built an empire worth three billion dollars while you were bleeding in foreign sand for a country that doesn't care about you. Emily was an obstacle. She found my financial nexus. She had to be erased."

"She was holding this when she died," I said, holding up the MicroSD card between my tactical gloved fingers. "She knew you'd try to erase her. She left everything behind."

Arthur’s calm smile finally flickered. A flash of doubt crossed his eyes.

"It doesn't matter," Arthur sneered, reaching slowly into his coat pocket. "The local police will find your body here. A tragic tactical shootout with unknown smugglers..."

Before he could draw his weapon, I pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck his right shoulder, shattering his collarbone. The force knocked him backward onto the wet tarmac.

He screamed, clutching his shoulder, his briefcase tumbling to the ground and popping open, spilling dozens of forged passports and encrypted hard drives across the wet concrete.

I walked up to him, placing the barrel of my rifle directly against his forehead.

"Look at me," I commanded.

Arthur looked up, his face twisted in pain and sudden, pathetic fear. The invincible criminal mastermind was gone, replaced by a bleeding old man lying in the rain.

"Please... Daniel..." Arthur gasped, tears mixing with the rainwater on his face. "I'm your father..."

"My father died eight years ago," I said. "You're just a target."
