Chapter 8 - Ashes of the DynastyI didn't pull the trigger.

Killing him on that tarmac would have been an mercy he didn't deserve. Death was too quick. Too clean.

Instead, the headlights of six federal law enforcement vehicles flooded the airfield, sirens wailing through the night sky.

Federal agents and military police streamed out of the vehicles, weapons raised, securing the perimeter. Behind them came Marcus, driving my SUV, with my baby son safe in the back seat.

I lowered my rifle as FBI HRT operators swarmed Arthur, pinning him to the ground and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Arthur Vance-Vane," the lead FBI agent announced, reading him his rights over the roar of the jet engines. "You are under arrest for treason, international money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and homicide."

Arthur screamed in fury as he was dragged toward a police transport, his legacy shattered, his financial network seized, and his freedom gone forever.

Three Months Later...The autumn wind blew softly across the quiet hills of the veteran's memorial cemetery.

I stood beside a polished black granite headstone engraved with a single name: EMILY.

Beside me, a stroller held my three-month-old son.

The DNA tests had been finalized by federal authorities during the investigation. And the final, shocking medical report from the state crime lab had revealed the ultimate truth—the secret Emily had fought so hard to protect until her final breath.

Arthur had lied.

Dr. Vance had lied under Arthur's orders to break my spirit.

The baby in the stroller was mine.

The compatibility report Vance had shown me was a crude forgery created by Arthur to make me abandon the child and leave him for Margaret to raise as a shell heir. Emily had swapped her real medical samples before her death, ensuring that the true bloodline was documented on the very MicroSD card she died protecting.

My mother, Margaret, and my brother, Caleb, were sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole for their roles in the conspiracy. Arthur was transferred to a maximum-security federal facility, where he would spend the remainder of his life in a windowless cell.

I leaned down and placed a single blue rose against Emily's headstone.

"We're safe now, Emily," I whispered, touching the cold stone. "He didn't win. They didn't break us."

My son reached his tiny hand out from the yellow blanket, his small fingers wrapping securely around my thumb—tight, strong, and alive.

I smiled through my tears, picked up my son, and walked away from the gravesite into the bright, warm afternoon sun.

The war was finally over. We were going home.
